He soon realized that this area had potential for religious growth as a result of its rich coal seam deposits which he suspected lay under the earth's surface near present-day Wheaton Avenue and North Avenue (later called Normal Road). In 1853 Wesley began construction on his large church on land donated by farmer David Goode within one block north of today's intersection of Sheffield Parkway/Normal Road/Wesley Chapel Boulevard (now Schaumburg Road). This new church would become one of the largestMethodist churches ever built. Reverend John Wesley also laid out streets in this area later known as Normal Road – Sheffield Parkway leading northeast from today’s corner; Northwest Drive leading southeast from today’s corner; Vine Grove Drive leading southwest from today’s corner; Apple Lawn Drive leading northwest from today’s corner; Elmhurst Drive leading northeast from today’s corner.) After serving as pastor at Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church until his death on May 10, 1893, Reverend John Wesley bequeathed $10 000 to build a library therein!
