Wheaton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Wheaton was Nicholas Prentice in 1836. He and his wife Sarah moved to the town from Peoria, Illinois on November 6, 1836. At the time of their arrival it was a rural community of around 200 people with only three stores and one blacksmith shop. In 1838 Nicholas Prentice built the first schoolhouse which he affectionately called "Penny's School". The school served as a day-school until 1861 when it became an academy under the name Wheaton Academy and continues to do so today. In 1840 Wm Higginson erected a gristmill on current site of East Green Street for grinding corn that he operated until 1862 when he sold it to John Aiken who operated it until 1865 when it passed into ownership of Nathan Myrick who operations it until 1903 when it was donated to Wheaton College by businessman George Myrick Jr.. In 1870 James Boggs founded the largest grocery store in Illinois at 211 N Milwaukee Ave., now known as Chicago Market. That store would remain open for over 100 years before being vacated in 1985 and replaced by Sears Tower (now One Fifth Avenue). Boggs also built what are now two churches: First Presbyterian Church (1872) and Union Chapel (1902), both located downtown on State Street near Lake Michigan Boulevard.Boggs' grandson Roy Ewing started Waukegan Independent School District #1 which serves students from grades pre-K through 12th grade along with neighboring towns Kankakee Heights, Grayslake and Evanston; all within Cook County government boundaries at that time. In 1969 WISD merged with Northwestern IL public schools forming Chicagoland Public Schools which still operates Wheaton ISD today! In 1914 Dr. Clarence Laughlin opened up his practice here - one of only two doctors practicing medicine outsideChicago during this period There were no hospitals or medical centers then like there are now - only physician offices and clinics providing care for basic needs such as surgery, childbirth & sick children etc... throughout much of America during this time...Laughlin soon developed a reputation as one of America’s best primary care physicians The first hospital / maternity center opening up hereabouts wasn't too far behind him however - Doctors McDermott & Walsh creating St Joseph's Maternity Hospital serving eastern Cook County beginning in 1915 followed by Mercy Medical Center next door at 209 N Halsted Street becoming operational in 1924... By 1930 there were over 50 doctor/patient practices operating hereabouts including many local family Physicians outnumbering any single Carefords or other top City Medical Centers ! A few years later however Dr Bob Willis opened up his own general practice adjoining Laughlin's clinic making this area even more vibrant with new Doctor/Patient combos popping up all day long !! This continued thru WWII era continuing into post-war days becoming quite an exciting times indeed !!

Wheaton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located about 20 miles (32 km) north of Chicago. The population was 5,684 at the 2010 census. Wheaton is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Illinois and has a wide variety of cultures that are represented by its residents. It is also home to The Wheatonian School District, which encompasses all of Wheaton Township and portions of Addison and North Aurora townships. The village started as a farming community near what is now the intersection of Morningside Drive and Prairie Avenue. A post office was established in 1871, and growth accelerated after construction began on the Northwestern Railway line from Chicago to Milwaukee in 1876. By 1880, the city had annexed much of rural Cook County and Wheaton became an incorporated municipality with a population over 1,000. In 1907-1908, work began on a new airport just east of town—later renamed Chicago-Havana Airport—and when it opened in 1911, Wheaton became one of the first municipalities in Illinois to have an airport serving both cities. Wheaton's strong cultural heritage has been evident throughout its history: For example, there are several churches from early settlers that still maintain their current locations within the community; as well as businesses such as The Gilded Cage Saloon & Casino which remain open today despite being closed for decades due to prohibitionist sentiment during World War I; or even more recent examples like The Park Theater which played host to Jonathan Demme's feature film "Patton" in 1982 and currently hosts live music performances every weeknight during summer months. Additionally, many restaurants operate out of locales that date back to before Prohibition ended; for example Joe's Pizza which operated until late 2008 at 6226 Niles Ave.; or Butcher Shop BBQ which continues operations at 7603 Niles Ave., directly across from Lake Michigan beachfront property originally used by Wrigley Field!
Wheaton was founded in 1824 by farmers George and Nancy Wheaton. The townspeople were able to get a grant from the Illinois legislature to build a school. The first students were taught by Mrs. Asbury. In 1830, the town had a population of about 20 people and it was decided that a library should be built as well. The first librarian, Mary Wigglesworth, started serving the community in 1831. In 1849, the town became part of Chicago and Wheaton lost its charter but kept its name.
