The Wheaton Rifle Company was founded in 1881 by Daniel Hale Warner and George P. Herndon. The company manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols, and revolvers. In 1902, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation. The Wheaton Rifle Company continued to produce firearms until 1967.

The first white settler in this area was Abram and Isaac Prentice who arrived in 1837. In 1845, Samuel Parsons moved from Westchester County, New York and purchased land east of present-day Wheaton on which he erected a frame structure called "Parsons House". In 1850, James Witherspoon bought property adjacent to Parsons' home and built a cabin for himself and his family. On July 4th, 1852, Witherspoon's cabin was burned by elements of an Indiana militia unit under command of Colonel George Armstrong Custer during the Battle of Washita River. This event is generally considered as the beginning ofWheaton's involvement in the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865, Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded Illinois and captured Springfield while invading neighboring Indiana; this event led to the establishment of Fort Dearborn as an outpost on what is now Northwestern Side streets near current day North Campus Drive in downtown Wheaton. Frederick Douglass also lived briefly at Fort Dearborn before moving away following its completion in 1868 due to negative public reaction to its slaveholding features. In 1870–71 Edward Everett Hale served as Mayor of Chicago; he had earlier been elected Sheriff of Cook County (the predecessor city to Chicago) after serving three terms as a Ulysses S Grant appointee on that position with no political experience before his election as mayoraltyBGW ref 11 p5 Wheaton began experiencing growth following World War I when several large companies decided to locate their headquarters here including Abbott Laboratories (later Abbott Pharmaceuticals), Armour Development Corporation (later Allstate Insurance Company), Ford Motor Company (later Ford Motor Co., Inc.), Du Pont de Nemours & Co.'s chemical company Noyce Chemical Products Division ( later Dupont Paper Industries), National Cash Register Company (now Deloitte & Touche LLP), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s department store chain Kress Department Store Limited Partnership (). After years Of effort by local leaders such as Mayorial candidate Abraham Lincoln Labarrer and businessmen such as Harry Burns Fenton (), plans were made for a new high school which would serve not just those living within walking distance but also students attending nearby schools like Park Row High School () which opened its doors in 1916 (). Today there are over 20 buildings on North Campus Drive that date back to these early days including Abe Lincoln Science Center (), Alton Towers amusement park (), Masonic Temple (), US Cellular Tower () A major milestone for Wheaton occurred on October 15th 1976 when Mayor Labarrer proclaimed "National Night" throughout all government facilities across Chicagoland in honor Of America's Unconditional Surrender To Japan At OK Corral (). This event marked both an occasion for local celebration () and symbolized how far along society had come since World War II (). The current Mayor is Lisa Madigan and the City Council has 8 members: 6 Democrats and 2 Independents. The history of Wheaton begins with Nathan Wheaton who moved from Ohio to be near his family's farmstead in what is now Wheaton Township (now part of Elmhurst). In 1837 he founded the village of Wheaton after purchasing 4 acres of land from John Brougham for $200 cash plus 10% interest; this Village formed an Alliance with other nearby villages to resist American Indian attacks that were common during the mid-19th century. On January 22nd, 1847 Nathaniel Lyon purchased 1/4 mile east of present day Wheaton from Mr. Potter for $100 which represented one-fourth share in total future growth of the Town site; this purchase marked the beginning of heavy industry in what would become known as Dearborn Heights. After many years more Apalachicola fur traders began arriving here looking for trade opportunities than had been available since their departure almost 150 years earlier they soon abandoned all hope of finding adequate winter grounds further upriver so they turned back home to Cuba Cove while supplies lasted…..this decision not only retarded development but also cost Dearborn Heights dearly when Captain Richardson found ample winter quarters just upstream…..the Indians then destroyed most or all evidence that Captain Richardson ever set foot on our soil……….the eradication by them not only caused great inconvenience but it effectively ended any chance for development hereabouts until recent times when “wild” animals have again begun to wander into our midst seeking food storage areas…………..numerous businesses sprung up along Michigan Avenue during this time including Singer Sewing Machine Factory (founded 1865), First National Bank (founded 1865), Armour & Coie flour mill (founded 1870), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (founded 1901)………in later years downtown business districts such as State Street between North Avenue and Decatur Road were developed while much smaller areas such as Emporium Shopping Center off West Side Highway continued to thrive…………….during these years much public money was invested in transportation improvements like streetlights etc…………….many good schools were built here also including Orchard Park High School which opened its doors in 1932…………………………one can easily spend hours walking through Dearborn Heights today and one does not find any examples where commercial enterprises have taken over completely without consent from previous occupants…………….during World War II large numbers of men answered government callups serving throughout Illinois including some living right here at home including 24 year old Enoch Smith who joined forces with General Patton’s 3rd Infantry Division headquartered at Fort Sheridan…………….In 1948following its annexation by Chicago – then IL – Dearborn Heights experienced rapid growth with new housing developments popping up all around town becoming home to thousands more people…………………………largest store built during this time however may be First National Bank located on Southport Drive across from Highland Park Elementary School which served both local residents and those living within a few miles radius………………………..much progress has been made since then particularly regarding education especially given how difficult it can be to keep pace with changing technology especially when it comes to cyberbullying activities among youth however there are still many challenges facing our community namely gun violence
