Wheaton was laid out in 1857 as a town in present-day Cook County by James Wheaton and his brother George. It gained its name from John Wesley Wheaton's birthplace near Westchester, England. The first post office was established at Wheaton in 1861. In 1870, it became a village; it remained so until 1959 when it became an incorporated town. The ZIP code for Wheaton is 60401. The Village of Wheaton merged with Park Ridge Township on January 1, 2009 pursuant to a special meeting held that day by township trustees with approval from village leaders following public input offered during open houses sponsored by both townships over several months prior to that date. At that time Park Ridge had 792 residents while Wheaton had 1,574 residents according to2010 census estimates

Wheaton, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,368 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of DuPage County. The first white people to arrive in Wheaton were fur traders from Canada in 1819. They named their new community after Isaac Newton and his Principia Mathematica. A post office was established in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of 130. In 1836, the name was changed to Wheaton Heights to honor John Quincy Adams’s victory over Andrew Jackson in the Ulysses S Grant–Andrew Johnson election campaign that year. Wheaton Township (1837) and Village (1839) were organized as townships within Du Page County on November 3, 1840; they became cities on May 14, 1860 when Chicago incorporation was granted to them as part of the city of Chicago area. On December 12, 1870 Wheaton became one of four towns incorporated into the city of Chicago; it remained a separate municipality until January 1, 1976 when it merged with its sister municipalities into one government unit under City Hall at 60th Street and State Street. The main commercial buildings now used for local government services still stand today: the old Board Of Education building on State Street (now home to Park Ridge Public Schools), City Hall Annex at 60th Street and Lake Shore Drive (now home to Presence Towers), and Park Ridge High School which opened in 1896-97 replacing an earlier school built on Elmwood Avenue east of present-day Ravenswood Avenue. When Wheaton annexed Racine Township (January 1st 1916) it also annexed East Aurora Township (October 15th 1916). These annexations increased its population size from 524 residents to 2,823 residents by 1921 when all these communities amalgamated as Wheaton–Racine Township which continued until 1955 when it again reverted back to its original form as Wheaton Township with Racine annexed back into it once more
