By 1840, however, agricultural production had ceased and the town began to decline. However, it wasn't until 1875 that local officials decided to initiate an effort to revive the town's economy by creating an industrial park adjacent to the city limits. This led to the development of what is now known as "The Industrial Park." The park consisted of several large mills which produced a variety of goods such as clothings, shoeshine boots, cigars (until prohibition), flourishes (until Prohibition), vegetables (until prohibition), lumber (until The Great Depression), cheese (from1886 until 1924; whey from 1897 until 1913) During World War II, many industries closed down due to wartime rationing but Wheaton remained largely unaffected because it was within city limits at all times. In 1945-1946 when Chicago closed its steel mills because OFW shortages had become critical during war time – Wheaton still thrived thanks largely to its relationships with other businesses within corporate boundaries: Des Plaines companies Eaton & Trumbull Refrigerators Ives Wagon Wheels McCormick Co., Paper Mill #2 John Hynes Company Seagrams Gin Fizzies etc.). These companies manufactured goods ranging from food items like beer cans and candy bars through munitions like machineguns In 1955-1956 when Chicago opened its new airport - much needed jobs relocated there including many manufacturers who moved their plants into newly built buildings on North State Street between Lafleur Road and Randolph Road west of downtown Chicago When Mayor Richard Mangel announced plans for demolition along Randolph Road - more than 100 years after construction began - many residents outcry ensued due primarily because they felt their homes would be bulldozed . After some public pressure from Mayor Mangel - who himself was born near Randolph Road - City Council voted 5-4 not only keep RandolphRoad but also approve funding for preservation Aftermath allowed portions of Randolph Road east ofState Street stay open as Greenfield Avenue while other portions were turned into parking lots

The store became a successful business and continued to grow until it closed its doors in 1925.
Wheaton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. Wheaton is located in the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the north side of Chicago and is bordered to the east by Ogden and to the south by Barrington Township. The village of Wheaton was incorporated on December 4, 1868, from parts of what are now Park Ridge and Northbrook townships. The first settler in Wheaton was George Sothern who arrived in 1847 from England. By 1860 there were sixty-six residents living in six houses on a site that would later be known as Main Street. On July 1, 1865, Wm. Hallett organized a town meeting which voted to change its name to Wheaton after his relative William Wheaton (1772-1827).Wheaton had been laid out as an all-black township on March 12, 1867 by John Tilton and Alpheus Barnes with boundaries that extended only north to South Side Road and east to Oak Lawn Avenue; it included no land west of South Side Road or north of Oak Lawn Avenue. In 1870 James Fenton bought two lots near present day Main Street for $1 cash and began developing them into a farmstead with four rooms and one basement used as living quarters for five farmers who worked their land: Fenton, Jno., Josiah Grayling (brother of Josiah Grayling), Caleb Smith (son of Caleb Smith), Amos Preston (son of Amos Preston) In 1875 vandals smashed windows at several local businesses including those owned by Samuel Morse Sr., Alfred Vail & Co., Sprague Hardware Company &cetera so much glass was lost that it took three years for replacement window frames to be produced which raised funds for new glass windows throughout the community In 1880 when voters elected Abraham Lincoln President they also elected George Stephenson Mayor who called for an election committee composed entirely of men because women could not vote then or indeed anyplace else in America At this time many people wanted universal suffrage so Mr Stephenson lobbied hard particularly among Mrs Lincoln’s own daughters Unsuccessful efforts led him eventually succeedin getting voting rights for black women through state laws enacted during Reconstruction era
