In 1862 Wheaton became part of what would be known as Midwestern United States when it became an integral part of Kansas Territory following Kansas’ admission into the Union as a state on November 16 that year. This process gradually reversed over time as more blacks moved westward into new states suchasOklahomaandArizonabecominglegalizedemigrantsratherthan remainingbehindin their former slave-holding states; however until recently few people realized just how extensively this move took place throughout northernKansas during this period especially given that most records pertainingto these changes have either been lost or are lightly touched upon by historians today1 . Residents of Midwestern United States were thus faced with an important dilemma: should they continue to live near their ancestral homes or move away for fear of being deported? After much deliberation residents decided to stay put due to both personal reasons (such as proximity to family) and political considerations (such as fears that if they left their homes Integration would become difficult). Consequently Wheaton quickly emerged as one of Northern Illinois’s leading towns during this era2 . This period marked a turning point for Wheaton when Mayor John Ryan declared it “a city without industry or commerce but instead simply an agricultural community [whose] only business now is agriculture6″7 . Nevertheless despite all these setbacks Mayor Ryan still managed to keep Wheaton alive until his death at 82 years old in 19788 ; another example illustrating how resilient small towns can be under hard times9 . However even under tough circumstances not every resident was happy; there were those who felt marginalized due to their race or ethnicity10 ; additionally some individuals felt unable or unwillingetointegrateintothecommunitydue TO THEIR RACE OR ETHNICITY11 ; nevertheless despite these challenges residents remained steadfastly committedtothetownofWheatiornorthernIllinoisdespiteallthehardships
