It remained that way until 1955 when it became a municipality under the name Wheaton Heights annexed from Park Ridge Township. In 1958, Park Ridge Township withdrew from Cook County and formed its own municipality with the same name; however, Wheaton Heights kept its county-level status until 1998 when it merged with other municipalities in Cook County to form the current City of Wheaton. The following year saw an incredible influx of people into Wheaton due to job opportunities opened up by then–Mayor Richard Manges's inner city redevelopment project which aimed to gentrify one side of Chicago's Englewood neighborhood while keeping high-income residents there. Many people who had been living near Chicago's Loop areas moved out into Westchester County or even farther west into Rush University area because they could no longer afford housing there anymore given skyrocketing prices for housing and jobs in downtown Chicago limits their ability to make payments on their mortgages which led them into foreclosure situations which put many families out of business especially those that depended on government assistance such as food stamps and Medicaid benefits during this time period known as "the Great Recession". This has led some people such as Mayor Manges himself have spoken out about how he feels about all this development taking place right around him but he still remains mayor despite much criticism from various quarters including some members of his own party who feel he does not do enough for downtownChicagoans who are trying hard but just can't keep up with rising prices and lack of opportunity caused by these types of developments .

Wheaton is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Wheaton is one of the oldest towns in Cook County and has been around since 1833. The first settler in what would become Wheaton was John Hays who arrived in 1833 from Kentucky. He named his farm "Hays's Grove." The town was laid out as a village on November 3, 1841 by George Niles under the name of Washington Heights. On May 25, 1846, it became the second municipality to be incorporated in Cook County when it united with neighboring Decatur to form Wheaton Township. The first post office opened in Wheaton on October 11, 1847 and continued open until it closed on July 5, 1865; its last mail being received on November 16th. During World War II (1939-1945), much activity took place within and outside of Wheaton due to military activity within and outside of Cook County including manufacturing plants located nearby such as Willard Steel Works which made munitions for both World War I and World War II as well as other companies that manufactured items for national defense like Raytheon Missile Systems located just north of downtown Wheaton which produced nuclear weapons before they were developed into full blown warheads by General Electric Company In 1957-58 two new high schools were built adjacent to each other (Washington Park High School & Forest Hills High School) resulting in enrollment increases for all three schools combined from approximately 2200 students when Washington Park opened up to 4400 students when Forest Hills did too however these buildings are now gone and replaced by elementary/second through sixth grade classrooms known as Crystal Lake Elementary/Middle School & Glenbard East Middle School across the street from each other serving grades 7-12 along with an adult daycare center called Child Care Now running inside those buildings until recently; this building also used to house a post office until 2006 while also housing some apartments although they have all been removed or converted back into single family homes currently there are no plans announced yet to replace them with anything else There has never been any major highway passing through or connectingWheataltoChicagoMunicipalities so most people drive instead which can get pretty slow during rush hours especially if you're trying to go southbound on Congress Street because everyone has their own lane going straight past you without giving you a chance to cross
Wheaton, Illinois was settled by the Celts in the late 4th century. The town was first called "Wintance" and then changed to "Wheaton". The town was named after George Wheaton, an American Revolutionary War general. Wheaton became a city in 1872.
