Wheaton has a long and proud history of gun ownership. The city was first settled in 1836 by Methodist missionaries, and early residents were avid shooters. In the 1860s, Wheaton became an important center for gun rights activism, and its residents developed a strong interest in firearm safety. Today, Wheaton is home to some of the most populargun ranges in Illinois, as well as a number of firearms museums and libraries. The first handguns were created in Wheaton in the late 18th century. Rifle societies were formed in the town soon after, and members would use their firearms to compete against one another at events such as rifle matches or target shooting contests. By 1800, Wheaton had over 100 rifles and shotguns circulating among its citizens. The town's gun culture continued to develop throughout the 19th century until it peaked during World War I when it produced over 1,500 pistols and machine guns for military service. After World War I ended, Gun Owners of America (GOA) was founded in Wheaton to promote civilian gun ownership across America. GOA spearheaded efforts such as Project Exile to increase access to firearms for low-income citizens; helped establish statewide concealed carry reciprocity laws;and co-founded the NRA who today remains one of Wheaton's largest employers. During this time period, many local businesses also came on board with GOA's anti-crime message by providing freeguns to police officers on special occasions or by selling weaponry at fairs and festivals alike. Wheaton is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of DuPage County government and home to Wheaton Community College. The first settler in what would become Wheaton was Levi Coffin in 1836. In 1847, John Fenton arrived with his family from England and founded the town of Fenton on a tract of land he had purchased from the Sauk people. He named it after himself and built a tavern called "Fenton's Choice." A post office was established at Fenton in 1852, and by 1860, there were 14 residents living there. In 1865, Isaac Hinton moved to Wheaton from Belleville and founded Hinton's Store on State Street near Presentation Road. By 1870, there were 24 businesses located in Wheaton. By 1880, there were 97 businesses located in Wheaton with a population of 3200 people. In 1886, Rufus Crouch opened the first grocery store in Chicago when he bought an old bakery on North Side street for $4 per year rent from Simeon Loring Jr.. The Illinois Central Railroad built a line from Chicago to Danville through Wheaton in 1854 and it remained an important node on the Northern Railway system until 1923 when it merged into the Pennsylvania Railroad. This gave Wheaton an important presence on both sides of the great river divide which separated North from South America for much of human history
