Wheaton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village and Borough of Wheaton are both located within Cook County. The first settler in what would become Wheaton was Nicholas Harger who arrived on October 10, 1814. He and his family were the first to purchase land from George Washington Carver and his family for $5 per acre (or $2 per head). That same year, Harger also constructed the first sawmill in Wheaton which still operates today as a private business with over 100 employees. In 1836, John Prentice founded the Trust Company of Illinois which played an important role in early Wheaton development. In 1838, two brothers by the name of Leland and Alfred Park purchased 2/3rds interest in Prentice's Trust Company from Prentice himself for $25 cash and set about building a sawmill on their own property which they named Park Saw Mill after their father-in-law Leland Park Sr.. Their mill continued to operate until it burned down in 1912; however, its timber remains extant as part of the current structure of Park Industries headquarters complex on North Main Street across from modern day Peterson Elementary School. In 1848 Isaac Wohl became one of the charter members of what would become Lake Zurich Congregational Church; he served until his death in 1901. Reverend Wohl had been baptized into that church when he was just 14 years old but had never officiated at an official service until he moved to Wheaton to be closer to friends there before his death at 78 years old. Reverend Wohl's gravesite can be found within today's Lockwood Cemetery off Butler Avenue adjacent to current day Stokes Middle School - one stoplight east of Interstate 90 - making him oneof only four Chicagoan Protestant pastors buried outside city limits during that period (the others being Revs Edward Muehlbach (1892-1981), Arthur Goldberg (1901-1990) and Harry Abrahamson (1905-1968)). One notable event associated with Reverend Wohl occurred some time later during World War II when while serving as pastor at Zion Methodist Church on State Street between West Side Highway 82nd & 83rd Streets - blocks south of now UIUC’s Roosevelt University – local Nazis disrupted services by vandalizing property inside church windows with crosses through out before fleeing back into Germany shortly thereafter following Allied forces’ operations therein resulting in numerous damage claims against German nationals residing within Cook County... Reverend Wohl also led worship services inside UIUC’s then newly built Memorial Chapel starting on May 13th 1945 Pandemonium erupted when Rabbi Sidney Siegel walked onto campus after sunset wearing an American flag lapel pin resultedinearly fifty arrests including twenty five freshmen students who were charged with disorderly conduct following prayers scheduled for that evening... nearly three hundred people turned out for service that evening including many veterans returning home post WWI... community spirit was alive and well throughout those days especially given President Harry Truman’s visit prior to commencement exercises whereupon Eisenhower delivered remarks railing against America’s past military interventions overseas The Village Of Wheaton was formed effective February 1st 1965 by consolidation of all 3 municipalities: Lockwood Township, Winthrop Township & Massey Township along Butler Ave., between Stevenson Rd./Ulysses S Grant Dr./Cook Rd./Alma St./Niles Road/East side highway access road leading northward from I 95 Tollway thru town center

Over time, other settlers followed including David Fairbanks and his brother-in-law Amos Lewis who founded the town of North Aurora in 1840. In 1854, the village name was changed from Wheaton to Wheeling afterelist Captain William Wheeling of the US Navy's USS "Baltimore". In 1870, landowner Samuel Bogan donated land to form what is now known as West Side Park which became one of Chicago's most popular areas for culture and shopping during its early years. In 1892, local businessmen amalgamated into the present day company town of Wheaton with similar boundaries to that of today's village; however, church services still took place at various homes until 1906 when it moved to its current location on State Street near Lake Michigan Boulevard. Churches such as Our Lady OF Lourdes and Stations Of The Cross remain standing today (2002) just outside of modern day Wheaton on Pritzker Road serving as a museum for local history buffs as well as provides tours for those looking to learn about how churches were used during different periods throughout their histories The village continued experiencing decline starting around World War II until 1960 when it exploded with growth due largely to new housing developments around Lake Michigan Boulevard which began flooding because of advances in technology like high water levels being controlled by sophisticated pumps that could adjust automatically according to weather conditions allowing more efficient use for farmland As more people moved into the area making it easier access for cars they also began moving away from traditional agricultural activities such as raising chickens or pigs which led to a decline in economic activity which has seen some businesses close down over time while others have been able to keep going thanks largely to donations by citizens or businesses that have since closed down
