The mill continued operation until it burned down in 1863; however, Hays' legacy lives on as one of Wheaton's longest-standing businesses and a source of pride for many residents. The city's earliest growth took place during World War I when more than 60% of all housing construction in Cook County was done within 1 mile (1 km) of Soldier Field – which was then Municipal Stadium – making Wheaton one of the most heavily populated areas in the county. This prospered because military personnel living near Soldier Field could easily purchase goods necessary for their troops' wartime needs without having to leave their homes or neighborhoods. However, after World War II ended and development resumed around Soldier Field, Wheaton lost some its commercial prominence but regained some ground relative to its neighbors over time due largely to its location within easy reach by public transportation system: being just 5 miles (8 km) from downtown Chicago made it easy for everyone living within walking distance either into downtown or out into centralChicago via bus or train . The first European settlers in what is now Wheaton were families from Hungary who came through land grant from President George Washington on November 3, 1786. They named their new village "Brigitte." In 1814, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and began his three terms as president of America's then-most powerful country, he announced that he would be traveling westward and would arrive at Fort Dearborn on December 4th for celebration purposes only - but he never arrived. On December 5th General John Potter led an expedition consisting of 500 men against Brigitte which resulted in a decisive victory over the Hungarians. The townspeople renamed themselves "Potterville" after General Potter's unit and continued to use that name until they became part of Chicago on April 6th, 1847 when it changed its name toChicago.[1] The first post office opened at Pottersville on February 17th, 1817.[2] The present Courthouse Annex building was built between 1906 and 1908 by architect Edward Lassiter with limestone blocks quarried near Kankakee (now Orland Park). Construction began on this structure shortly before Lassiter's death; however due to an accidental fire which destroyed much of downtown Chicago during World War I,[3][4] no completed project ever saw public use;[5][6][7] until it was leased for use by Wheaton Township trustees as their meeting place starting September 1st, 1994.[8] On January 24th 1916 Mayor Richard J. Daley dedicated what is now known as Palmer House – located adjacent to today’s “Daley Plaza” – becoming the first mayor of Chicago to do so inside City Hall itself since Mayor Beame accomplished same feat two years earlier while still serving as Cook County Board Chairman under Governor Adlai Stevenson II! That same year also marked one significant event within Wheaton history: construction began on what would soon become home field for Woodland Hills High School football players during their formative years—the current WLS Stadium! A dedication occured there just days later following a game vs North Side High School where then Head Coach Don Nehls personally presented players coach Phil Savage with a Lombardi Trophy commemorating their undefeated season that season! Later that year WLS sold naming rights back to Northwestern University providing additional financial stability for stadium operations until 2007 when all university sponsorship ended due to budget cuts affecting many college sports programs across America! Priorities shifted towards student soccer matches played there annually during Intercollegiate Season rather than paying professional athletes high prices to play there each season! Finally beginning in 2001 following efforts spearheaded by newly hired Director/CEO/President Drue Weitzer[9], WLS renovated both end zones ( east / west ) & steel frame grandstands resulting in increased seating capacity from 25 up to 50+ thousand fans per contest making it possible for even more students and community members alike access thosestadIUMduring intercollegiate contestsc urrently !Today’sfacility includes HD videoreens surrounding all stands along sidelines providing excellent atmosphere for large games such as NCAA Men’s Division I Football Championship Game live stream or other big events !!!In memory of late great head football coach Phil Savage owner & CEOof WLS Stadiumannounced plans will begin demolishing old facility located just outside campus boundaries between East Campus Road & South Campus Road effective immediately priorTo date none have been released further information please visit website
