Wheaton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Wheaton was John Coyle in 1836. He and his family moved from Ireland to this area around 1847. The original village of Wheaton was founded by James Gamble and others in 1868 as a result of the land grant from the Illinois General Assembly. The name "Wheaton" first appeared on a plat map of Cook County dated November 1, 1868. At that time it consisted of just east of present-day State Street and west of Belmont Avenue; it included only about one-third of present-day Wheaton Township, which forms its eastern border with Cook County. In 1893, local investors organized the Village Green Corporation to purchase all but 6 acres (2 km²) of what is now downtown Wheaton from John Coyle for $5 per acre ($/hectare). This purchase necessitated the demolition or relocation (depending on perspective) of many early homes and businesses within then-Downtown Wheaton – including almost all those within today's First Congregational Church building on State Street between 61st and 62nd Streets – though much remains still standing today including some parts dating back to pioneer days such as the whetstone quarries located near current day Maplehurst Road and Old National Road (now Kane Boulevard). In 1903–1904, following an outcry over unprecedented noise levels caused by Singer Sewing Machine Company factory operations just northward along State Street – resulting in dozens more complaints being filed with city hall than any other single issue during Mayor Jake Ryan's tenure – Mayor Ryan ordered Village Green Corporation management to reduce production at adjacent Singers facility by 50%. Notwithstanding these protests and public criticism culminating with a mea culpa letter published in "The Chicago Tribune" Newspaper on October 17, 1904 stating "the company has been too noisy lately", management continued increased production despite mayor's orders until 1907 when new legislation compelled them to stopProduction entirely due to impending riots ensuing over housing projects across Chicagos inner city neighborhoods . By 1912 approximately 80%ofthe buildings remaining within Downtown Wheaton had either been vacated or demolished; however much remainder still stands today including some parts dating back to pioneer days such aswhetstone quarries located near current day Maplehurst Roadand Old National Road (now Kane Boulevard). Most notable among these remaining structures are three large blocks surrounding First Congregational Church building: One bounded by Kedzie Avenue & 63rd Streets; another bounded by Wabash Avenue & 64th Streets; while lastly one bounded by Dearborn Avenue & 65th Streets which remain visible both inside and outside the current church building…today known formally as “The First Congregational Church”… [which] served not only as home for residents but also functioned as an important meeting place for township settlers prior to their arrival in 1908 when they pooled their resources together under one roof... [later becoming] known officially as “First Congregational Presbyterian Church”… In 1924 Community College began offering classes on campus through local teachers who livednearby…. Today Community College offers full range courses taught by qualified professors from aroundthe world…..
