Wheaton is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name comes from London's Wheaton House and its railway station on the Great Western Railway. The first white person to live in what is now Wheaton was James Robertson who settled there in 1809. He started a fur trading business with his brother Alexander and their father John Robertson. In 1812, John moved his family to what is now Elmhurst, Illinois after land he had bought from the Ottawa people was sold to them for $4 per acre. James built a home there and became known as "TheFather of Elmhurst." In 1834, Samuel Gridley founded Grange Insurance Company in Wheaton with six employees and $5,000 worth of premiums collected from farmers throughout Cook County . Gridley served as president until his death in 1886. After Grange went bankrupt during the Great Depression, several other insurance companies were established before Mercantile National Bank acquired it in 1935 and changed its name to Mercantile National Bankshares Incorporated (MNB). MNB merged with American Life Insurance Company (ALI) on October 1st 1969 to form Allstate Corporation (). Wheaton continues to be an important commercial center within Chicago; its four hospitals—Cook County Hospital (CCC), Advocate Christ Medical Center (ACC), Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) and Rush University Medical Center—have been among the top10 recipients of Medicare payments for medical services rendered within Cook County since 2002. Additionally, grocery store chain Kroger has presence in town with two storesins Wheaton Marketplace and one at Oakbrook Terrace Shopping Center . Other major employers include FirstMerit Bank which operates 17 branches across Chicagoland; Abbott Laboratories which manufactures vaccines for humans and animals; Ford Motor Company's Lincoln division headquarters are located here; Northwestern Illinois University which administers various scholarships/admissions programs including those for Windy City Schools; also headquartered here are many smaller companies that contribute significantly to local economy such as Hennepin Electric Cooperative (), Archer Daniels Midland ()and Wrigley Foods ().

Wheaton is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2000 census. The name of the town derives from Wheaton Chapel in nearby Wheaton Heights. The first people to live in what is now Wheaton were the Pembrokes and other settlers who arrived around 1800. They were farmers and ranchers. In 1824, William Dixon founded Dixonville on land that he had purchased from the Pembrokes. This settlement became known as Dixonville because it was located near the east side of Chicago on Lake Michigan Boulevard (now Interstate 55). In 1836, Daniel Webster settled in Dixonville and began operating a store there which became one of the largest in Dixonville. Establishing a school and providing health care services to his community helped Webster achieve success both as an entrepreneur and politician. In 1872, John Loyd built a sawmill on what is now McDonough Road which soon became one of Chicago's largest lumber mills. By 1900, Wheaton had become one of Chicagoland's most prominent towns with over 10 thousand residents
