Wheaton also has a significant international airport and several colleges and universities. According to the 2010 census, there are 9,822 people living in Wheaton. Of these residents: 82% identify as white; 6% identify as black or African American; 1% identify as other than white/black; 5% identify themselves as Asian or Pacific Islander; and 1% identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino (of any race). The percentage of female residents compares favorably to that of male residents: 83%. There are 7%, however, who self-identify as “Other Races” which includes individuals from all races who identifies this way up to 25%. Male Residents make up 71% of what lives here – more than any other gender group! In 1870, Wheaton became one of four cities in Illinois established as part of the Great Chicago Fire Relief Effort. The following year saw an increase in commercial activity as well as population growth; by 1875, Wheaton had become one of the most important commercial areas in Illinois. Throughout its history, Wheaton has been a center for education and industry; it is home to two universities and several major businesses including Motorola Solutions and PepsiCo Inc..
