Westmont is located on the Fox River in northwestern Cook County. Westmont was founded in 1857 as a farmstead on the east side of the Fox River. In 1870, it became an agricultural community and saw its first post office established that year. The population peaked at 10,500 in 1960 and has declined since then; however, its current population stands at 9,521 as of the 2010 census. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place within town limits with new businesses and homes opening up along with expansions to existing businesses like Hooters Pizza and Wetlands Nursery among others. The Portage Park neighborhood which surrounds Westmont had high levels of crime rates until recently but this has started to change with more people moving into the area which has resulted in decreased crime rates overall for that particular section of town

Westmont is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2000 census. Westmont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was founded on October 12, 1892 by German immigrants and their families who had recently come to America from Gerdinghausen am Rhein in Germany. The first settler in what would become Westmont was Wilhelm Kappeler who arrived on October 12, 1892. Kappeler and his family were the first to build a home in what would become Westmont. The name "Westmont" was chosen because it seemed like a place with plenty of wood for fires and hills for hunting. The original post office located at 10 E Plainfield Rd served only residents of that township; however, when the township became part of Cook County on April 1, 1896 it became an incorporated village with its own post office at 137 W Prairie View Ave., which continued to serve as its main administrative center until it closed on November 30, 1958 due to lack of customers. In 1911 pioneer Frank Loring built what is now known as the Loring Millinery School which still stands today adjacent to the Park District property which includes much of what is now Westmont Village including Loring Road and Allendale Drive (now owned by Aldi). In 1912 he also started the first grocery store in western Cook County called "Fruits & Veggies." At that time there were no supermarkets or local businesses like we have today! In 1916 Fenton Pottery opened up shop here too- making this little corner community one of greatest potteries west of Chicago! Also during this time many homes were built here including: Mrs A Smith's house (built 1902), Dr Duhl's house (1912), Mr J H White's house (1915), Mrs C G Kerns' house (1920-25) and finally Harry Wexler's house 1925-30 which still stands today! Many residents during these years such as Mr T Lowenstein ran their stores out on Main Street between 45th & 46th Streets - an amazing accomplishment back then! That same year also saw another milestone when Baseball Hall Of Fame member Joe DiMaggio made his debut playing for nearby North Shore High School against South Side High School here! It wasn't until after World War II did Shopping Mall related businesses start arriving here such as Safeway followed by Dick's Sporting Goods before Walmart moved into town in 1960. Today many different types of businesses operate within walking distance from all manner of retail shops making it easy shopping no matter where you live!
