In 1881, Westmont was a small town in the county of McLean in Illinois. It had a population of about 350 people and consisted of just three buildings. The only public building in town was the schoolhouse which was used as a barn. In 1882, the first scopes were made in Westmont. They were designed by Mr. John Fenton and were called the Fenton optical instruments. In 1883, two new schools were built in Westmont and they each had two classrooms and a library. In 1884, there was an agricultural fair at which Mr. Fenton exhibited his scopes. In 1886, Mr. Wm Hahn bought land for a factory to make rifle sights for shotguns. That year also saw the birth of what is now known as "Westmont's" most famous tourist attraction - The Observatory which opened in 1889 on the east side of town near what is now the high school campus. At its peak, The Observatory had 300 employees and it offered more than 100 programs including falconry, shooting competitions, lectures by scientists, children's programming and more! The popularity of The Observatory led to an increase in visitors so much so that by 1903 it had outgrown its original site on State Street (now Main Street) and moved to its current location on Elm Street outside of town limits! From 1903-1914, both The Observatory and then-Town Hall served as either local or state government offices respectively during this time period; however due to budget cuts City Hall took over operations from 1914-1920 when it burned down! The last major project completed at The Observatory hands before it closed was making improvements to optics for artillery use starting in 1924 which later became known as "Optical Weapons Manufacturing Company". Upon closure all remaining records from The Observatory were destroyed but some remnants such as glass slides remain today at the Western Illinois University Library Museum located adjacent to Old Main Campus

On October 14, 1886, while monitoring the motion of Mercury with his 7 1/2 inch telescope, Franklin D. Roosevelt used it to make what is now considered one of the most important observations in history - he detected and tracked Hurricane Frances as it barreled through southeastern New York Harbor! In 1937, American astronomer Edwin Hubble discovered that black holes existed in galaxies far beyond those near Earth. This discovery has led to new insights into our universe and its structure!
Westmont, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,362 at the 2010 census. It is the third largest city in Cook County and the tenth largest city in Chicago. Westmont is located on the west side of Chicago and shares borders with Aurora to the north, Lombard to the east, and Oak Lawn to the south. Westmont was founded as a small farming community in 1853 by John R. Westphal and others from what is now neighboring Aurora. At first it consisted of only a few homes and families; but over time it grew into a self-sufficient town with a library, hospital, post office (1879), cotton gin (1881), three schools (1905-1909), two churches (1911-1920), fire department(1920), and many other civic activities. In 1906 Mayor George Wohlmann ordered that all schools be built on one campus so that children would have "a common schoolhouse for instruction." The current downtown area was developed between 1911-1920 when part of Westmont's annexation by Aurora made way for new development on what is today Roosevelt Road. Today's downtown areas include several significant businesses including Sears Tower (1975) within easy walking distance of most residents while also featuring art galleries, restaurants/bars/cafes/, theaters/theaterspaces/, shopping malls/residences (/westmontpark/., etc.), an excellent public transportation system (/metraphp//www.metrawebmedia.com/. As one of America's fastest growing cities over the past decade or so - reaching 1 million people within 10 years - Westmont has seen its infrastructure grow as well: more than doubling its police department size since 2000; adding dozens of ambulance vehicles; building new libraries; expanding parkland; and investing heavily in water supplies and energy generation technologies like solar power arrays and wind turbines (among other initiatives). And this growth isn't limited to just downtown: recent expansions have included Butler Park – home to an active open space large enough for basketball games, soccer matches, concerts & more – as well as numerous smaller communities scattered throughout suburban neighborhoods near downtown such as Fox Valley Rancho Estates (), Elmhurst (), Deerfield Village () & Willowbrook ().
