It has a ZIP code of 60622. Westmont was founded in 1847 by Nicholas Westcott and his brother-in-law John Ladd as a farming village on land that they had purchased from the Peoria tribe. They named their settlement after Mount Washington, in New York State where George Washington had been born. The village grew rapidly and by 1872 it had over 100 residents. In 1875, Nicholas Westcott married Eliza Holcombe who became one of the principal citizens of the village and helped to develop its economy. She served as treasurer of Westmont from 1892 until her death in 1912. during her tenure she helped to establish several schools including Western High School which now serves as part of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine; Stonington Elementary School; and Parkwood Baptist Church which is also home to Northwestern University's Harry S Truman Presidential Library and Museum. In 1907, Westmont was annexed by the City of Chicago; however, much growth did not take place due to lack of transportation or infrastructure within the boundaries for what would become Chicago's first "inner city". A few years later in 1916 when Mayor Richard J Daley increased taxes for all municipalities within Greater Chicago (colloquially "The Great Lakes Area"), residents voted overwhelmingly to secede from Chicago into their own municipality known as Westmont Township with its own government and school board! The incorporation process took three months with over 2200 signatures being collected from registered electors! On May 3rd 1917 WESTMONT TOWNSHIP VOTE TO SEPARATE FROM CHICAGO WITH ITS OWN GOVERNMENT & SCHOOL BOARD! After more than two decades farming villages like Westmont thrived while inner city neighborhoods withered away due largely to investment misdirection by developers looking for easy profits without creating any jobs or improving public services!!!
