Westmont is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern part of the city of Chicago and is bordered by the communities of Humboldt Park to the north and Westwood to the east. Westmont is one of three towns in Cook County that are completely within Woodlawn Township. The community was founded on October 15, 1871, when five men from neighboring town of Marquette moved from their farms in that township to start a new settlement called "Westmont." At first it consisted only of a transient group of fifteen people living off farm products they brought with them from Marquette. In 1872, two more men - John Denton and Lemuel Howland - came to join the original settlers and soon there were twenty-five people living in what became known as "Westmont." In 1875, another man - George Jensen - arrived and soon there were thirty-five residents. By 1880, Westmont had become an established community with its own schoolhouse and post office. During World War II, many patriotic Americans chose Westmont as their home because it was close to Chicago's military plants. A large number of soldiers who served during both World Wars lived or worked in or near Westmont until their retirement years; some even left behind families who still live here today. Many businesses were started or sustained by these veterans' contributions: Automotive Services Inc., National Steel Car Company (NSC), Aviation Parts & Accessories Co., Western Electric Corporation (WE). Today many continue to do so due to the strong sense of community felt hereabouts since World War II has not diminished one bit!
