Westmont is one of the oldest towns in Cook County, founded on the site of a small settlement in 1837 by John Stephenson and other pioneers. In addition to its namesake west wind activity (the name comes from a nearby waterfall), Westmont is known for its many cultural attractions, including two museums - the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's American History Museum and The Art Institute of Chicago's museum of art - as well as musical venues such as The Riviera Theatre and House Of Blues. The town also has several golf courses, a lakefront park with an ice rink and amusement park that includes Six Flags Over Illinois attraction Illini Park. In recent years it has developed into an attractive suburb for both workers and students who commute to larger metropolitan areas. As early settlers moved westward through what are now central Illinois they found fertile land but little water so they began constructing ditches to convey water to their homes from nearby creeks or rivers. One mill owner built his mill on present day State Street near where today's Old Main building stands; this first gristmill processed flour only for local consumption until 1839 when another mill opened on Menard Road just south of US 61 which became known as Stephenson Mill RD after John Stephenson's father-in-law who ran it. Many people worked at these mills during pioneer days such as Richard Ford who operated Ford’s Mill #2 which ground corn into flour for local markets until 1857 when he sold his interest to Ephraim Burritt who operated Burritt’s Mill #1 which continued grinding corn until 1918 when it closed because of World War Idisablement Only later did operations resume at Burritt’s Mill #2 which still grinds corn but does not produce flour The first post office established in Westmont was called Belleville on October 1st, 1837; it was moved to current day Mayfair shortly thereafter due to postal service improvements being made at that time that improved travel times between Belleville & Chicago (& all other counties). A second post office called Prairie View was established on January 14th, 1840 located north of present day Woodlawn Drive east of Bellefontaine Avenue; this location may have been based off the old prairie village near East Dundee platted around 1800 according to some sources though more likely this location sprang up because there were few available buildings within walking distance then & no postal service either! Lackland Post Office located on present day State Street southwest sideOf Stevenson Rd.; Operated under Leland Stanford Postmaster from November 22nd 1862 thru May 11th 1865 following consolidation with Edwardsville Upper Arlington Post Office located southwest cornerof Mass Ave., WSW OF Stevenson Rd., & UPPER ARLINGTON RD.; Opened July 20th 1861 by Dolphus Rodgers after his purchase of adjacent Hennepin Station (@ grid reference N/A) Belleville Post Office relocated 12 miles northwest across State Line Rd./Old Belleville Turnpike onto modern day Belvilleshire Cty., IL map (1842) @ grid reference N/A Mayfair Post Office relocated 6 miles northeast along modern day South Side Highway onto present day Mayfair Avenue; opened December 2nd 1794 Edwardsville Post Office relocated 7 miles southeast along modernday Elmwood Avenue onto present day Edwardsville Boulevard; opened February 3rd 1800

Westmont is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Westmont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1853 as a small trading post by Methodist missionaries who were sent to preach Christianity to the Lakota and other Native American peoples living in what is now Kane County. The post office was established in 1854 and remained open until it closed in 1907. In 1915, Westmont became a town based on its annexation by the larger city of Chicago. In 1951, Westmont merged with neighboring towns of Burr Ridge and Winnetka to form the new city of Chicago Heights. Chicago Heights annexed portions of Burr Ridge and Winnetka in 1954 and 1957 respectively, making Westmont an official part of the new cityhood even though it still maintains its own independent government. In 1978, when Cook County merged with Kane County, Westmont become one of five villages within Cook County proper (along with Aurora,avora Airport-Southwest Side; Elmhurst; Hinsdale; Northbrook). Cook County also annexed parts of LaSalle Township from DuPage County which made Westmont an enclave within that jurisdiction for legal purposes only - no real law enforcement or governance took place within the village itself. In 2000, after yearslong negotiations between various factions within Chicago Heights over control over public services (including zoning changes that would have madeWestmont into an exclusive high-end development zone), Mayor Richard Munchacker proposed annexing all but two square miles (almost all of present day Westmount) to make way for more prosperous development adjacent to Loop 610th Street - this proposal failed despite strong opposition from some members of Chicago Heights' governing body who saw annexation as another step towards total control by their opponents inside or outside the community."
