Westmont is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westmont is home to Mount Carmel Academy, one of the largest private schools in the United States and one of the most selective high schools in Illinois. The community was founded by John Pemberton and his family on a tract of land north of Kankakee in 1855. The name "Westmont" was chosen because it occurred to Pemberton that if he could find an opening like those found near Mount Carmel Chapel (now Mount Carmel High School) in western New York State, then maybe other people would build there too. The first settler's house was built on what is now Park Drive and they named their children after local landmarks: John for Kankakee Creek; Emily for Mount Carmel Chapel; Anna for Anna’s Plains outside Ottawa; George for Green Township east of Kankakee; and Harry for Hillcrest Cemetery west of Ottawa. John Pemberton died suddenly while outfitting his wagon train with supplies during a journey from Nauvoo to Independence on November 30, 1856 at the age of 56 years 3 months old due to an illness contracted while traveling through Iowa Territory. His wife Sarah stayed behind with their two children before continuing her husband's journey back home across Missouri River into Illinois That same year, Westmont saw its first residents when Isaac Bronte moved down from Canada with his pregnant wife Catherine Bronte and six-year-old son Michael along with his horse and stockade to begin farming here as well. In 1865 Isaac Bronte married Mary Jane White who had also come overland from Ohio that year on board the CSS Hannibal under Captain David Dixon during the American Civil War as part of General Armstrong’s expedition against Confederate forces around Cairo, Illinois In 1850 John Pemberton had been a carpenter by trade but decided he wanted to start something more than just selling goods door-to-door so he opened up a store initially called “Pembertons Emporium” located at 256 S Dearborn St which eventually grew into what is today known asMount Carmel Academy which became operational in 1875 . In 1907 WDM Music began operations at 5500 N Michigan Ave being one of only two music stores open across all five counties within McCormick County pre-internet days! Today much has changed since 1775 when pioneers such as John Pemberton discovered this fertile soil south central McLean County - especially given our location right next door to Chicago & Northwestern Railway tracks giving easy access both day & night! Although we may not always be able to see or experience some aspects firsthand like outlandish weather patterns or extreme poverty (& lack thereof), our community roots continue strongly even tho times have definitely been tough financially recently... With so many young families moving here each fall seeking opportunities unavailable anywhere else these days (particularly manufacturing jobs), Westmont has seen some amazing transformation including new homes being built throughout all types/price points imaginable: large 4 bedroom units averaging $225K+, 3 bedroom units averaging $157K+, 2 bedroom apartments starting around $123K++... Westmont, Ill., was founded in 1859 by a group of farmers who had come from Illinois to purchase land in the newly formed state of West Virginia. The town was named for General George A. Washington, who had been instrumental in driving British troops from East Tennessee during the American Revolution. The first settlers were men from Kentucky and Ohio, but soon enough residents from all over Illinois began moving to the small town. The early years of Westmont were difficult, as the soil was poor and there was little water available. However, through hard work and determination, the community began to grow and develop into a thriving agricultural center. In addition to its farming activities, Westmont also became known for its successful manufacturing businesses: It Washerwomen’s Manufacturing Company produced clothes for local consumption and export; Post Office Products company manufactured postal boxes, stamps and other products;and Coal Mining Company mined coal on nearby property. In 1951, when Congress passed the Civil Rights Act Amendments (CRA), Westmont became one of the first towns in Illinois to affiliate with the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NACP). NACP was instrumental in helping African Americans achieve equal rights both inside and outside of Westmont itself. Today, many black locals still reside in or have strong connections to Westmont – including Mayor Rufus Sewell – because of its history and role within NACPism.
Westmont was founded in 1837 by John Wesley Powell. The town was named after the mountain range that makes up much of its territory. It grew rapidly, and by 1860 it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1870, Westmont had become an important center for railroad development. In 1904, the United States Census listed Westmont's population at 25,674. By 1940, the population had increased to 40,000 people and it remained relatively stable through the years until the early 1960s when large-scale suburban development began to take hold in the area.
