Westmont was settled by German-Americans in the late 19th century and has since become an English-speaking community. The town is home to Mount Carmel Academy, which offers high school education and college degrees; Mount Carmel United Methodist Church; and Westmont Elementary School. Westmont was founded in 1892 by John A. Westcott and his wife Anna Maria Zimmerlocher. John A. Westcott had arrived from Germany in 1857 and started a farm east of Decatur, Illinois. He became a landowner in Kane County and purchased 309 acres (128 hectares) of land for $3 per acre ($25 per hectare). In 1893, he donated another acre (0.50 hectare) to the town of Westmont to be used as open space. The first school opened in 1895 at what is now Mount Carmel Academy. Westmont was a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois, on the banks of the Sangamon River. It ceased to exist as an incorporated town following the death of its founder, Hiram Westmont, in 1867. The first residents of Westmont were farmers and their families who came from New England in the early 1800s. They started a store and village called Westmont Village, which was located near what is now Union Station. The village lasted until 1825 when it was abandoned because of low trade volume. In 1827, Hiram Westmont founded what is now Westmont Township. He had emigrated from Vermont and purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land along the Sangamon River for $10 per acre. The township originally consisted of only 10 homes and 2 sawmills. In 1840 it increased to 20 homes and 4 sawmills with a population size of 100 people. Hiram's son-in-law, Elijah Dixon, became head constable in 1847 after being appointed by Governor Solomon Goode Jr.. Dixon made significant contributions to township governance including developing water systems and erecting roadsides for farming purposes. He also promoted education within the community; at one point he offered free grammar school instruction to all children living within 1 mile (1 km) of his home. By 1850, there were 350 people living in Westrontown Township including 70 farmers and 30 mechanics; 60% men or more than 50% women worked outside the home throughout most if not all aspects of their lives: agriculture, manufacturing or service industry jobs such as laundry work or domestic servant work during middle class times before unions came about). However due to high levels infectious disease fever rates began increasing beginning around 1870 which caused many families to flee westontown for health reasons particularly Gold Rushtown eastside where much higher rates were available due primarily to overpopulation problems brought on by gold discoveries in that area
