Westmont is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,033 at the 2010 census. Westmont is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was platted in 1856 by Nicholas Wetmore and James Wigglesworth. It was named for Colonel John West (1796-1868), who had come from Dover Township, New Jersey to pioneer the area. A post office called Westmont was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1871, General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Westmont while on his way to defeat Fort Sumter during the American Civil War. Sherman made an appearance at a school parade organized by members of the community and distributed items he had acquired while campaigning across Illinois such as cigars and whiskey. In 1893, a new high school building was built on Summit Avenue adjacent to what is now Loyola University Chicago's downtown campus; this building served as home to the high school from 1890 through 1928 when it moved to its current location on Western Avenue near Churckeen Park before being replaced again by the current building in 1951-1962. The population of Westmont declined over time due to several factors including suburbanization; however, there has been an increase in recent decades due to gains made by neighboring Elgin County and phosphorus mining operations which have led to increased agricultural production within walking distance of many homes throughout town center A primary employer since its founding has been local grocery store Lester's Grocery which remains one of town's most important businesses up until recent years having seen multiple family members join hands with both parents working side-by-side or taking turns running things day/night shift inside that store with no break even resulting not only helping maintain viability but also providing some stability for these families once their children got older and started their own families themselves According to 2016 census data about 60% of households live below poverty line making it difficult for people living here regardless economic status

The first store opened in 1841, and by 1845, the first school had been built. The name of the town changed from Hickeyville to Westmont in 1849 because of David West's support for slavery. In 1865, during the American Civil War, most of the men from Westmont enlisted in the Union army. However, many residents chose to stay behind to help farm their land or work on farms near Chicago. In 1886, John Atherton developed an oil shale mine at nearby White Sands National Monument which led to increased production for Westmont residents; however, this also caused some economic downfall for the community as businesses closed down and joblessness arose. In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Westmont while he was on his way through Cook County on his way back from what became known as "the Arithmetic Tour." After talking with some of the local citizens about their experiences living in Westmont during that time period he ordered that all remaining buildings be destroyed so that there would be no reminders of it ever existing. In 1916 Eastman Kodak introduced photography into America with their new camera system called "Kodachrome". This introduced a whole new level of photography which required chemicals used to produce images like Kodachrome could not do without these materials - this made Kodachrome quite expensive which affected how much money people were able to bring intoWestmount
