Westmont is a village in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,397 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was founded by Quakers in 1837 as meeting place for settlers traveling to what would become Illinois. The village developed rapidly and by 1860 had a population of 2,500 people. In 1870, it became a town and in 1896 it became an incorporated community. Westmont has experienced several expansions since its incorporation and growth; the current population stands at over 4,000 people. The Village of Westmont was founded on November 3rd 1837 by Quaker settlers from Jersey Township (now Elmhurst), Pennsylvania with land given them free of charge on condition that they build their homes within one year or face expulsion from the township. On December 12th 1838 minutes were taken to organize the first meeting with voting being open to all who desired membership including men and women not already citizens of Jersey Township. Eleven members attended this first meeting which consisted mostly of those who had either bought or rented land in what would become Westmont Villageites today make up about ninety percent of its current population! In 1840 trustees hired John Sellers to survey real estate for the town site as well as provide engineering services for development purposes should problems arise with construction schedules set forth by Town trustees - these services continued until 1861 when Sellers resigned due to health reasons after serving his full term without interruption thereby ensuring that development proceeded uninterrupted! The present day clock tower can be traced back to early spring 1865 when work began on building a new schoolhouse also known as “The Gilded Cage” stonework was completed two years later! This beautiful neo-Gothic structure served both as home for school board meetings as well as providing classrooms and office space for teachers until 1978 when state funding replaced teacher salaries with student aid dollars resulting in discontinuation of use & replacement cost!! Quaker Meeting House #3 still remains standing today just off Chestnut Street opposite River Road !!
Westmont was a small town in Cook County, Illinois until it merged with the larger city of Chicago on January 1, 1907. The merger created an area that is now the downtown core of Chicago.
