Westmont, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was platted in 1853 by Eli West and his brother-in-law Nicholas Lyon as a village on the east side of Chicago. In 1892 it became an incorporated town. The first post office was established in1893. The name originated from an uplandreek word meaning "west wind." The first school in Westmont was opened in 1875 by Mrs. Cushman and several students from the outlying villages of Grayslake and Woodfield Heights who had moved to what is now Westmont after their homes were destroyed by fire along with other buildings in downtown Chicago during the Panic of 1893. In 1902 Wm Henschel donated land to build a high school which eventually became North Central High School; also built were two garages for the high school's athletic teams and one gymnasium/auditorium; these were additions to the original building that still stands today on State Street south of Center Avenue. Clarendon Hall (now home to Northwestern University) also housed classrooms, a library and science laboratories before moving into its current location on First Street west of LaSalle Avenue in 1961 following completion of renovations associated with suburbanization within Cook County which included new development around Northwest Side streets like LaSalle Avenue north of Lake Shore Drive just east of Cicero Boulevard Buena Park: This entire movement led to increased traffic congestion on LaSalle Avenue which caused some problems for North Central High School over time as it could not keep up with increased demand while also serving students from Elmhurst (to its north), Lincolnwood (to its east) and Gurnee (to its south). With Notre Dame Cathedral just across laSalle off I-90 Southwest near Campus Point Road this created another pressure point for administrators trying to maintain infrastructure adjacent to large universities while providing extracurricular activities for students despite being located minutes away from more central campuses; additionally, since North Central High School served mostly pre-K through 8th grade until 1979 when K–12 schools began opening throughout Cook County including those within city limitsDistinctive features include brick piers supporting a concrete superstructure that towers over much older frame buildings extending down into Adams Park where most residences are located; giving evidence that brick piers were originally intended as support systems rather than roofs or walls given their ability resist road damage well into later years even though many have failed due to old age and weathering.; Additionally there are numerous Craftsman bungalows typical among early 19th century farmers particularly found along Adams Park avenue northeast of campus;; Another indication that farms generally functioned as family residences is golf courses such as Deerfield Golf Club which opened in 1925 only feet from campus;; Finally one should mention churches such as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church built c1900 immediately adjacent to campus;; All together these clues lead one back towards an agricultural lifestyle which often produced goods used for daily life such as clothing, shelter, food storage etc.; From here one can see how quickly settlers arrived at what would become Westmont including Eli West who purchased 1/2 mile (.25 miles) square league lot next door to his house on Depot Street soon after arriving from New York City

Westmont is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Illinois and has a unique blend of cultures that can be seen from its streets and homes. It also has a rich history dating back to 1836 when it was founded as part of the Indiana Territory. The first settlers arrived in what is now Westmont in 1836, during the opening of the Chicago River Valley. The area was then known as "Arrowtown", because there were many arrowheads found hereabouts. The town name derived from nearby Arrow Creek which empties into Lake Michigan. Founded by George Stephenson on November 1, 1836 as part of the Indiana Territory, Westmont became an important business center for both Indiana and Illinois due to its location on the main route between these two states. During its early years, WESTMONT was known for its fine flour mills and other industrial products such as tanning hides and sacks. However, by 1840 WESTMONT had largely replaced INDIANAPOLIS as an economic center for eastern Illinois due to new transportation options available along the Chicago River network. On October 3, 1848, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate General John Crouch's brigade crossed over from northbound trains at Rock Island Depot into westbound cars on Railway Avenue south of present day Fourth Street in order to reach Westmont before they could be reported killed or captured by Union forces advancing through those areas near downtown Chicago
