After years of decline in agricultural activity due to changes brought about by global warming and other environmental issues – especially those affecting nearby Deerfield – some residents decided to move out of their homes and into newer areas around west suburban Chicago while others purchased properties or retired altogether within sight of their old homes.

In 1951, the town built its first fire station and it continued to be used until 1978. From 1961-1963,Westmont became an official city of Illinois.
