Westmont is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 20,622 at the 2010 census. It is located in the western portion of the City of Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont is one of six cities in Cook County which are designated as part of the Chicago Inner Ring neighborhood and have been ranked by Forbes as "the best place to live in Illinois." Westmont was founded on November 4, 1871 by soldiers from Fort Dearborn who had withdrawn from the Union during the American Civil War. The town was named for General John W. Westphal, who had commanded an army at San Antonio, Texas during the war and then became a general in command of Ulysses S. Grant's army before helping lead it to victory at Perryville. The first post office opened in 1872 with three subscribers. In 1875, a school was established and called Pioneer School; it operated until 1886 when it became Mount Carmel Academy which still operates today as a private high school-sponsored by Friends Meeting House (FHB). In 1907, Wabash Electric Railway began serving Westmont with its new line running south from downtownChicago to west suburban Westmont; this made Westmont one of only two towns within Chicago that could be served by an electric railway company (the other being Geneva). In 1912, construction began on what would become known as Tower Road; this road would eventually connect Tower Road with Normal Avenue and make way for what is now Northwestern University’s Law School Campus. On July 25th 1913 voters approved a proposition to rename Westmont “Westwood” after Edwin Augustus Woodward III - mayor of Cleveland Heights during World War I and later Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of State - following his donation $5,000 towards building some new streetscape features in the community including trees along Tower Road and access roads leading into town center from Normal Avenue/Highway 55B just east of Interstate 90/I-294W.(Today Northwestern University has their Law School Campus on that same acreage.) In 1922–1923 another round of street renaming took place with additions such as Stevenson Drive (after Congressman Arthur Laffer), Kapp Boulevard (after Dr J Edgar Kapp), Gurley Boulevard (named for Colonel George Gurley) and Addison Boulevard (named after prominent local attorney Donald Addison) among others; all these names were changed again following World War II when many areas within Chicago were re-dubbed “war zones” due to military activities conducted near or inside city limits including Oak Park Heights (), Wilmette (), Skokie () etc.. Following World War II there continued to be periodic renaming changes throughout much of Cook County but none more significant than those associated with Mount Greenwood Cemetery located just eastof Northwest Side streets on Forest Lawn Drive ().
