Westmont is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,089 at the 2010 census. The name of the town had been Westmont Village until 1872. It is located on Chicago's northside and its boundaries are drawn along State Park Road (U.S. Highway 67) to the east and Westmont Avenue to the west. The first settler in what became Westmont was John Gould who arrived in 1836 from New York City. He built a cabin on his farmstead which still stands today and served as a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Chicago and other communities in DuPage County. In 1839, another pioneer, James Aiken, came from Maine and platted what would become Westmont village on land he had purchased from Gould. Aiken named his community after himself, George Washington Aiken. In 1872, when Chicago began annexing townships into its city limits, Westmont became one of several villages within the new municipality of Kenwood. In 1893, when that municipality was dissolved and merged with Grand Crossing to form Chicagoland],Westmont again became an unincorporated village within Chicagoland proper due to lack of incorporation requests from other nearby townships concerned about their potential impact upon Kenwood's growth rate). In 1976-1977 Wetherill College constructed a $20 million campus on part of the original site of Gould's farmstead which now encompasses much of downtown Westmont as well as much residential development around it including many high-end homes dating back to before World War II; also included were some small businesses that occupied buildings close by such as Furniture Outlet Warehouse #1 & 2 across Main Street from present day Hobby Lobby; these buildings have since been demolished or converted into luxury condos/apartments (FOW 1 & 2 stand current day exterior view but interior removed for modern purposes having totalignore 3rd floor windows). Additionally, manufacturing jobs lost ground during this time period while new businesses such as meatpacking started to grow larger and richer than those founded earlier in the decade. However, despite these challenges, Westmont managed to stay afloat through these tough times and continued to thrive over subsequent decades until experiencing significant growth following World War II. In recent decades, however, some key aspects of Westmount's history have come under attack from residents who argue that they are not properly memorialized or remember their predecessors adequately enough - specifically those who experienced hard times during those same decades (e.g., war-time layoffs).
