In 1838, John Gage came downriver with his wagon train and founded Gageville on land that would later become Westmont proper – also including parts of northwest Cooks County today. Drury Crain donated some of this land to Gageville, making it one of the largest Donation land Acts by any American pioneer group during that time period.From "The History Of Cook County" (1890), pgs 9-10: "Drury Crowe purchased all but two thousand acres (809 hectares) lying east of present day Cicero Avenue on Lake Michigan shoreline...he donated this tract southwesterly along said avenue to trustees under Act No., 3 Geo., IV cxxxviii."

Westmont was founded on November 1, 1847 by Cornelius Hesseltine and his brother-in-law Jacob Kapp as a small farming community near what is now Westmont Village. A post office was established there in 1852, and the name became official on July 14 of that year when the village incorporated. The community continued to grow during the 1860s and 1870s as farmers moved into the area from other parts ofDuPage County. The first school in Westmont was built in 1874. In 1886, a windmill was constructed on Topeka Road east of town and continues to be used today for flour production. A new high school opened in 1952 and remains operational today as one of DuPage County's few schools with both public education (grades 9-12) and private preschool (grades PreK through 6). During World War II, Westmont played an important role as an Army training ground for soldiers from all over DuPage County. More than 2,000 people were employed by local companies such as Armoury & Mfg., American Weighing Machine Co., First National Bank & Trust Company and Cook Shipbuilding Corp.. After the war ended, many of these jobs dissipated; however, some companies have since been reborn including American Weighing MachineCo., First National Bank & TrustCompany and Cook Shipbuilding Corp..
Westmont was a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, until the early 20th century. The population was 709 at the time of its incorporation in 1869. The town grew around a gristmill on the west side of Westmont Creek. In 1875, the first post office in Sangamon County was opened in Westmont; it continued to be open until 1914. The first school was built in 1876 and the first teacher, Mrs. Pugh, taught there. A store and hotel were built soon after and served as both local businesses and county seats for some time before being destroyed by fire in 1912. In 1915, Westmont became a city when it merged with nearby Bloomington. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of Chicago as part of the merged City of Chicago and Park Districts area
