Westmont is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westmont was founded in 1892 by George H. White and his brother-in-law John A. Welsh as a small farming community on the west side of the tracks between Hyde Park and Bronzeville. At its peak, it had a population of 3,500 people and was home to one of Illinois' first shopping malls and two large universities: Northwestern University (known today as Northwestern Memorial University) and Loyola UniversityChicago (now Loyola Marymount University). Today, Westmont's economy depends largely upon services such as education and health care; its primary industry has been agriculture since before it became an incorporated town. The original white settlement near what is now Westmont Village began to grow rapidly after railroads arrived in the early 19th century; by 1870 there were more than 100 residents hereabouts. By 1900, however, most residents had left for other nearby towns due to poverty or political unrest caused by local land ownership changes that occurred during this time period. The only resident still living in Westmont when the first census taken in 1890 was George H. White; he died less than two years later at age 73 from natural causes at his home on Wabash Avenue just east of where he had founded Westmont Village thirty years earlier.* Today that same address marks one end of State Street which runs through downtown west suburban Westmont Village - once homes to many farmers & their families who worked day & night making this "village" what it is today thanks to GWH!* In 1892 George H White founded #WestMont IL on corner Wabash Ave & State St about 2 miles east of where he lived back then *still liveing (& well!) on same address
Westmont was founded in 1847 by John C. West and his wife, Elmira L. West. The town was named for the two hills that were nearby, Mount Pleasant and Mount Zion. In 1848, the first school in Westmont was opened. A post office was established in 1851, and a store was built in 1865. The first church in Westmont was erected in 1853. By 1860, there were 15 homes in Westmont. In 1862, the first railroad reached Westmont from Rockford Junction to Carbondale. In 1865, a fire destroyed most of the buildings on Main Street in Westmont. However, new buildings were constructed on this street within a few years. In 1870, an addition to the west side of Main Street led to the development of what is now called Park Place east of Main Street. This addition included a six-story building designed by architect Thomas Jansen that served as the first large block of housing on this side of town
