In 1887, they built a large cotton gin and started marketing cotton to farmers in neighboring towns. The plant closed in the 1940s but reopened as an agricultural museum in 1984. In 2007, Western Springs became home to the world's first dedicated horse racing track with artificial turf and horseshoes made of synthetic rubber. The tracks are open to the public during daylight hours only. The community has several businesses including two grocery stores, two banks, three hotels/motels and one car dealership. There is also a library which opened in 2006 and plans to add more than 20 new books over the next few years.

Western Springs is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Western Springs was named after a spring located within the village boundaries. The first permanent settler in what is now Western Springs was David Cook in 1836. Cook and his family homesteaded on the east side of town near what is now State Street. From here they surveyed and founded farms throughout Kane County before moving to their current location in 1840. In 1846, Captain John Davenport established a post office at Western Springs with mail service from Rock Island via Stagecoach Road. By 1860, many farms had been organized into townships within Kane County and Western Springs became one of these townships with its own post office on May 6th that year. In 1863, General James Buell's Union army invaded central Illinois and destroyed most of the railroads supplying Springfield with food and munitions for the war effort. This caused great distress among farmers in central Kane County who were already struggling to survive during the American Civil War without help from government officials or private enterprise. In 1865, when operations reopened following Buell's withdrawal from Illinois, western Kane County again became one of the hardest hit areas due to lack of food production as well as Confederate military activity aroundSpringfield- all possible sources of income for many residents were gone forever The early 20th century saw heavy development in Western Springs- including an increase in businesses (most notably an insurance company) which led to increased traffic on state highways entering through town garage doors For much of this time there were no schools within town limits- children simply walked or took streetcar rides to nearby schools while they attended morning classes or afternoon assemblies One notable exception was when Drury High School opened its doors for students in fall 1922- making it one of only two high schools open during Prohibition era America Starting around World War II there was significant growth and investment by Eastern manufacturers into western Kane County which has resulted in more jobs available for people than ever before During this time period several new churches were built along with social clubs, libraries and other community services . Over time some residents have leftWestern Springs for better opportunities elsewhere but there are still numerous cultural artifacts from early days such as Pioneer Cabinets manufactured by J & G Henschel which are still being used today
