Until 2003, when it merged with neighboring Whitehall to form Western Springs-Whitehall Township, Western Springs was one of only two townships in Cook County that did not have a high school education beyond grades 8–12. As of the 2010 census, there were 9,749 people living within 2 miles (3 km) of either side of Center Road: 4 percent black or African American; 24 percent white; 64 percent married couples living together; and 16 percent single individuals or widows/widowers living alone. Overall female enrollment stood at 54%, compared to male enrollment which averaged 50%. Western Springs, Illinois was founded in 1814 by General James K. Polk and his men as a small community on the banks of the Gage River. The town grew quickly, and by 1847 it had over 1,500 residents. The town's growth caused problems, and in 1851 the legislature passed a bill calling for a census to be taken of the town to determine its size. Western Springs complied with the request, but when the results were released they showed that the town had actually grown by almost 100%. The census also revealed that Western Springs had outgrown its original boundaries and was now including parts of what is today Streator County. In response to this news, the legislature again passed a bill calling for another census to be taken within five years. This time however, Western Springs refused to comply and instead created its own government under an act known as the "Western Springs Constitution." Despite this resistance from within the townspeople, western Springfield continued to grow rapidly due in part to new transportation methods such as railroad construction which allowed goods and people from far away to move into the small community. By 1870 western Springfield had reached 2,000 residents and began growth once again thanks in part to new industry which sprang up in nearby Carbondale: mining operations led to increased production which drove down prices for goods being sold inwestern Springfield and helped drive businesses such as shops and restaurants downtown. Western Springs was first settled in 1836 by residents of the town of Peoria. The area that is now Western Springs was part of what is now Moline, Illinois. In 1856, the town of Western Springs merged with the village of North Aurora to form a new municipality. In 1915, the name was changed to West Bridge Township and in 1917 it became a borough. On January 1, 1997, West Bridge Township became a village again and on December 4, 2002 it reverted back to its original name.
