In 1916, Rufus Haines donated two hunting rifles to Western Springs as a gift from his estate to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. It is also said that General Leonard Wood fired the inaugural shots at Ulysses S. Grant's Tomb on Cemetery Road back in 1865 when he served as an aide to General William Tecumseh Sherman during his march through Illinois! Western Springs, Illinois is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Western Springs was founded on a farm by one of the first settlers in Sangamon County. The initial settler named it Springdale after his home in England. A post office called Springdale was established in 1831, and remained in operation until 1955. The western end of Western Springs is known as "The Hill". It rises to a height of 412 feet (122 m) and overlooks the town center and surrounding countryside. The name comes from a 1-mile long ravine that runs through the center of town. TheOldAnchor House Museum Complex contains artifacts dating back to 1829 including an early Bucket Brigade cannon and several pioneer tools used during the early years of American settlement in Sangamon County.

The first white people to live in this area were the Shawnee Indians. The first European to visit Western Springs was French trader and explorer Jean Baptiste Marquette in 1679. He named the springs after his home town of Tours, France. In 1779, General James Neilson founded Fort Snelling on the east side of Western Springs. This fort served as a trading post for fur traders and settlers during the 18th century. The fort was abandoned in 1825 and most of its equipment was lost when it burned down.
