The first European to visit Western Springs was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Westernia." Englishman John Butler passed through this area in 1681 on his way to Trade Fair at Kaskaskia. The first year of English occupation saw much activity here as traders and settlers traveled through this region looking for new land to settle. In 1780, General James Cook explored this area while on his way from Lake Michigan to Japan and named the river he crossed the "Cook's River" after him. In 1847, Western Springs became a station on the stagecoach route between Chicago and Rockford via Decatur and Brodhead Streets. This route changed several times over the years but always served as a transportation link for farmers west of Chicago who could not afford cars or trucks. In 1916, when Route 66 reached here from Streator via Cicero Avenue and Elston Street (the original routing), Western Springs quickly emerged as one of its most popular tourist destinations due to its historical architecture and wide variety of attractions available within easy walking distance: including pioneer-era residences built by citizens of nearby Steubenville; two historically significant breweries - Pioneer Brewery on State Street (founded in 1876) which still produces craft beer today; The Greyhound Bus Depot where you can buy bus tickets downtown; an restored flour mill dating back to 1856 that produced flour for local stores; an artesian well that provides drinking water for several hundred people near town center; a golf courseette off Newton Road just south of town center offering challenging golf courses throughout all months of the year; plus many other unique attractions making it one stop along Route 66!
