Western Springs, Illinois is a small town in the far north-central corner of the United States. It is located on the border of Kane County and Cook County. The town was founded in 1854 by Mormon settlers from Nauvoo, Illinois. The population was 775 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Western Springs were fur traders from Canada and northern Michigan who came in search of buffalo herds in what is now central Illinois. In 1828, Major George Rogers Clark sent a party of three men overland from Fort Wayne, Indiana to explore the area around present-day Springfield. They camped for several days near what is now Westmont Elementary School before continuing their journey northeastward that same year. In 1854, Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young set out from Nauvoo, Illinois with eight wagons and four horses to establish a new settlement called Western Springs on land they had acquired east of Kankakee Creek. The original settlers were Methodist Episcopalians who named their new community after General David Dixon's Spring Grove Farmstead in Spencer County, Missouri where they had been living since 1799. Western Springs is a small town in western Illinois, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Western Springs was founded in 1871 by James A. Stevenson and his family as a small community on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The town grew gradually and reached its peak in the late 19th century as an agricultural center for central Illinois. In World War II, Western Springs helped make up for a lack of military production in nearby Joliet by providing workers for Ford Motor Company's factory there. However, following the war, Western Springs began to decline as manufacturing businesses left for other locations or closed down entirely. By 2007, only 1% of its residents were still employed within the town's core business sector; most people lived in surrounding villages or outside of town altogether. The modern history of Western Springs begins with developer John Ralston Purcell's construction of what is now known as Purcell Park in 1967–68. At that time, it was one of few comprehensive development projects taking place in downtown Chicagoland; it included over 200 housing units and more than 50 commercial buildings including a hospital and bank facilities. Today, much ofPurcell Park remains vacant – until recently home to a collection of defunct factories – but portions have been demolished to make way for new retail and entertainment uses such as basketball courts and restaurants (the latter being opened by Sam Adams Brewery). In 2008–2009, local citizens overturned an zoning change approved by city leaders that would have allowed a Sears store to open at Pioneer Village Shopping Center adjacent to Interstate 57 southbound exit 419A (now State Street). Prior to this decision petitioners had argued that Sears could not survive without operation within walking distance from all Northwestern Illinois residents; however opponents countered that allowing Sears inside their own hometown would be like giving FedExcredit card customers "a building inside your store." After months-long talks between both sides – which included public hearings throughout the village – final approval was given on November 15th 2009 unanimously voting 9-0 with no abstentions before moving forward with planning permissions sought from county land use officials "Sears' closure would be devastating not just for our village but also neighboring communities due to their large investment," said Jennifer Koppelman when she testified during deliberations phase #2 about how bigoted Mayor Rahm Emanuel & City Council are against any type cultural/business impact on their neighborhoods
