Western Springs, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the border of Champaign and Urbana counties. The population was 9,864 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Western Springs was first settled by Germans in 1810.In 1836, General James K. Polk sent a detachment of Ulysses S. Grant's army through Champaign County to attack the Native Americans living there. Although successful in taking many scalps, Grant's troops were forced to retreat after encountering fierce resistance from the Native Americans and their leader, Black Hawk (or Sachem). In 1838, John Templeton donated land to form what would become Western Springs Township. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union forces fighting at Northwestern Indiana Reserve Base Camp burned down part of western Springfield Township while skirmishing with Confederate forces nearby. After the war ended and Union soldiers vacated Northwestern Indiana Reserve Base Camp for home assignments (the camp had been established as a tenderloin-hunting ground for officers), Springfield Township remained unoccupied until it became an incorporated village in 1902 under one name or another: Springfield Township Incorporated (1902), Western Springs (1902-present), or simply Western Springs (1860-present). As a result of its rich agricultural history and proximity to major cities like Chicago and Indianapolis., Western Springs has long been a center of commerce and industry; today its businesses include several large companies such as Prontera Corporation and United Technologies Corporation.
