Western Springs is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Western Springs was founded in 1852 by Nicholas Lyon and his family. Lyon named the town after springs located in present-day Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia. In 1865, John Ewing built a gristmill on the banks of the creek that flows through the town. The mill produced flour for local markets and served as a breadmaker for many years until it went out of business in 1922. In 1906, Edward Ahern started a grocery store in Western Springs with three shelves and eighty-five customers. Ahern's store remain an important part of the community to this day. In 1912, Marion Lusk opened her first restaurant in Western Springs. Lusk's restaurant became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town and remains open today as a seafood restaurant serving fresh seafood from local waters. Over time other businesses followed suit such as convenience stores (KFC), gas stations (C&H), taverns (The Saloon & Pool Hall), beauty salons (The Salon Gardens), clothing boutiques (Uncle Sam Store) and more! Today there are over seventy businesses operating within walking distance of Western Springs' main shopping district including several restaurants, gift shops/stores, pharmacies/medical supplies outlets/centers/, hotels/motels/, ball games stadiums/, etc.; making it one of America's most vibrant small towns!

Western Springs, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 439 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Bloomington, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Western Springs were French traders Pierre Laclède and Jacques Marquette in 1674 and 1675 respectively. In 1786, Andrew Johnson founded a trading post on the site of present-day Western Springs and named it Johnson's Ford after his First Infantry Regiment's colonel who had died in an Indian raid near Fort Michilimackinac that year. The post served as a base for Native American trade until 1801 when settlers arrived from Kentucky and Indiana. As early as 1836, the area became known as "The Prairie". In 1856, General George Washington Stephenson founded the Illinois Central Railroad here. After years of debate about whether or not to build a transcontinental railroad through central Illinois (the decision being made by President James K. Polk), construction began in 1861 and completed in 1865. In 1870, Western Springs became one of five towns along with Peoria, Bloomington–Normal, Moline, and Rockford incorporated into Chicago as the City of Chicago; this suburbanization has continued to this day. During World War II much activity took place at Park Ridge Arsenal which merged with neighboring Hardee's Army Ammunition Plant to become one of America’s largest munitions manufacturers during World War II responsible for creating 1 million jobs across all 50 states directly or indirectly throughout manufacturing sectors including explosives production; park Ridge also manufactured aircraft parts for Boeing plants located overseas from soil dug up from Australian beaches during Operation Overlord landings on European shores; these days Lockheed Martin manufactures advanced stealth fighter planes at Park Ridge Arsenal using “dual-source” technology gleaned from underground tests conducted adjacent to Menominee Lake while under US Navy SEAL control). In 1945 following Japan's surrender Americans moved out of Japan leaving behind thousands of Japanese nationals living among them including many academics and scientists who had been working on peaceful atomic energy projects supervised by Dr Tokuhide Isobe at Wernher von Braun's Marshall Institute; however little was done with these people other than storing their belongings in local storage facilities until they were eventually deported back to Japan some time later under public protest led by Truman Capote.) Many families remaining here chose instead to return home after V-J Day although there were still few permanent residences available so many people simply returned home overstay visas or returned via airlift once they learned about availability.–today most residents are descendants either direct or indirect descendants of those who lived here during WW2 thru V-J Day.)
