Gun targets have been used in Western Springs, Illinois for over a hundred years. The first target practice area was located on the south side of town off of State Route 31. This area was known as the “gun ground” because so many people were killed or injured by guns there. The first gun target shooting Club was formed in 1892 and operated out of a small lot located near the present day intersection of State Routes 5 and 31. This club sponsored rifle and shotguns competitions which attracted many shooters from throughout the Midwest. Many local citizens contributed their time and skill to this organization. In 1907, a large new target range was built on the west side of town off of State Route 31. This range became very popular with our hunting and fishing friends because it offered excellent opportunities to shoot at moving targets without getting shot at yourself. The clubhouse served as both the home field for our team tournaments and also housed our collection of rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition and other shooting supplies. During World War II we experienced some major changes when we went from being an agricultural community to becoming one of the largest manufacturing centers in Illinois! Gun Targets played a significant role in this rapid growth as we began producing precision firearms for military procurement worldwide. In 1948 we sold our company to Hunt Manufacturing Corporation who continued to operate us until 1971 when they closed down due to technological advances in production methods that made them no longer able to compete against those manufactured by Glock Inc.. Today, Gun Targets still meets all requirements set by Mr Hunt himself including accuracy (measured with eye relief receivers) which is unparalleled anywhere else!

Western Springs, Illinois was founded in 1827 by a group of farmers who came from Virginia. The community developed around a trading post that was the first in the area. The post operated until 1846 when it was destroyed by fire. Western Springs became a small town and started to grow around its schools and churches. By 1930, the population had increased to over 1,500 people and it began to annex adjacent townships. In 1957, Western Springs became an incorporated city and today has a population of over 12,000 people. The city is home to several museums including the Illinois State Museum and the Western Springs Cemetery.
The original Western Springs was a small settlement in the area now known as Quincy, Illinois. It was founded by James and Elizabeth (Foley) West in 1811, during the time of the Northwest Territory's initial organization. The first stores were built at what is now the intersection of State Street and Wright Road. In 1814, Western Springs became the capital of the Northwest Territory. In 1815, it also became one of the first U.S. states to be admitted to Confederation. In 1821, Eastern Illinois acquired Western Springs from its owners. Afterward, Western Springs gradually declined in importance until it was abandoned altogether in 1868 when Quincy incorporated as its own city. Today, only a few buildings from that time remain standing, most notably a former school building which is now used as an apartment complex.
