Western Springs, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Western Springs is located on the west side of Chicago and has a total land area of just over 12 square miles. The community began as a small farming town in 1873 when Captain George Stephenson founded the city of Western Springs on his farm near present-day Davenport, Iowa. Stephenson's wife, Mary Jane (née Higgins), brought over her entire family to start a new life in what would become Western Springs. The first residents were mostly farmers who had bought property from Captain Stephenson after he moved west from Ohio to start a new life in what was then Indiana Territory. In 1877, Eastern Illinois Railroad built a line from Steubenville, Ohio to LaPorte County,Illinois and started construction on the western end of the line at present day Western Springs. This allowed for more people and businesses to move into what would be known as "the valley." In 1880 or 1881, Captain Stephenson donated all his land east of Davenport for development into an agricultural village called Springfield Township with platted boundaries that include today's eastern edge of Western Springs and parts of Decatur Township on its north side; these boundaries remain today as well as most developed areas around Springfield Ridge Road and Springdale Avenue which run adjacent to Central Park Lake where much shopping takes place today duringowntown business hours between 8am-6pm. As Springfield Township grew larger it needed more water so they acquired title to creeks that flow through their township including West Branch creek which flows through present day Northwestern Heights and forms part ofboundary withSpringfield Township; also they took title to East Branch creek which forms partof boundary withDecatur Township before finally acquiring all creeks within Springfield Township excludingwest branch Creek especially since private ownership did not exist at that time On January 1st 1903 when Cook County became organized it included portions of LaPorte County including modern day Western Springs within its borders making it one entity however at this time there was no official name given by county officials or residents for this newly created community other than "Western Springs". The second phase in development for Western Springs came about when Dr Jesse Moulton purchased 640 acres east off Highland Ave from Capt George Stephenson effective July 1st 1907 having originated outta funds raised thru fundraising drives conducted by friends & family members prior thereto chosing $10 per acre purchase price payable within 5 yr thereafter thru Trust Company Notes due @ 20% interest only tho no deed could be issued until such time funds available wouldn't expire…..Dr Moulton laid out plans & put together building permits & hired architects while residing overseas……..He continued regulations governing agriculture here w/ strict limitations w/holding cows 3 days outa 10 wk gestation limit penning them up 6mo–12mo then returns them back inside limits same restrictions re milking etc…………….This period saw many changes take place here w/ improvements galore including: interurban bus service via Hwy 111 just outside town starting Jan 1914 (still running); electric lights – installed Feb 1915; hospital built 1923 named St John’s Hospital & later merged wit Univ Of IllINOIS medical center becoming Oak Lawn Hospitals…all told some 14 major projects occurred during this time……………………………………….Today [April 21st], 2013 W S P I CO K CT
