The town of Western Springs, Illinois is located in the far southeastern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 3,069 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. Western Springs has a history dating back to 1837 when prospectors discovered gold on the surface of what is now known asIllinois. In 1860, Eastern Kentucky mining company owner James W. Gilmore founded a small town near present day Western Springs in order to market his gold claims. Gilmore renamed his new settlement "Western Springs" in honor of his original discovery site. In 1871, John Dickson established a post office in Western Springs and soon began to sell goods and services to miners and other residents in the area. By 1902, Dickson had built a large mill which he operated until 1946. During World War I,Western Springs served as an ammunition dumps for Union forces fighting in France. After the war, many businesses closed due to laissez-faire policies by Governor Samuel Janklowe and local officials such as Mayor John Ahernsmeyer. However, some businesses reopened after changes were made in government priorities that favored industry over agriculture; this included support for heavy industry during World War II along with increased regulation by the wartime Office of Price Administration (OPA). From 1951 through 1957, Western Springs saw rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance from major cities such as Chicago and St Louis. This development was helped by western expansion into what had been farm country – starting with big construction projects such as Interstate 64 – while also experiencing increasing economic opportunities thanks to advances in transportation technology including interstate highway building and deregulation following World War II In 1990–1991 management changes at Rockford-based Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company led to sharp reductions throughout Northwestern's entire Midwest business units; these were followed by similar cuts at Western Springs operations two years later following allegations of financial irregularities at one subsidiary related to insurance premiums paid out on products no longer guaranteed or required under state law . The town of Western Springs, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John C. Westfall and his wife, Lucy. The small community was located on the banks of the Chicago River, about two miles east of present day Western Springs. The city hall and various other buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1916. The population of Western Springs increased from approximately 100 people in 1870 to over 1,000 by 1910. In 1924, the city council passed an ordinance which allowed for the sale of liquor within city limits. In 1948, construction began on a new airport which would provide passenger service to Eastern Illinois University (EIU) in Urbana-Champaign. The airport opened in 1951 and served as both base materiel for NATO forces during Operation Magnum Force and also served as an air taxi service providing service between EIU and other nearby communities including Carbondale, IL; Normal, IL; Rockford Heights, IL; Peoria Heights Park Reserve Park & Golf Club; Downers Grove Southside Park & Dunes Resort; Shorewood Village Shopping Center; Wilmette/Reston East Side Mall; Northwest Side Highway Department Store; along with numerous smaller airports throughout central Illinois . In 1973-1974, work began on what is now known as Dairy Row shopping center which became one of the most successful shopping developments ever initiated in central Illinois . At its peak employment status it had more than 150 stores employing close to 2 million Americans . Work ceased on Dairy Row when economic conditions changed after years of consistent growth . Today much of that section remains vacant although some redevelopment has taken place
Western Springs was founded by Daniel Boone in 1775 as a trading post on the Western River. It became a town in 1837 and was designated as the county seat of Cook County in 1847. The Illinois Central Railroad came through Western Springs in 1862 and it lost its status as the county seat when Cook County was merged into Chicago in 1889.
