Western Springs is a town located in Sangamon County, Illinois. The population was 9,841 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the Western Springs-Hurstville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Western Springs was platted on November 1, 1837, by John Stephenson and others under the name "Valley Forge." The name was chosen to honor General George Washington and his retreat from Valley Forge in 1777. In 1843, Western Springs became a part of Springfield Township. On February 14, 1907, it became a part of Sangamon County when that county was created from land previously occupied by Union Township and parts of Whitehall Township. The first post office in Western Springs was established on July 12, 1840, by A.C. Mulligan; it changed its name to "Valley Forge" on October 2 that year due to objections from neighboring towns that saw their names as being too similar to those of Valley Forge Campground (now East Springfield). In 1854 the first cotton gin in Western Springs was built by Jeptha Hines and Wm Blythe; it continued operation until 1875. The first railroad reached Western Springs on December 1, 1869; it was the Illinois Central Railroad. On January 6, 1907, Eastern Illinois Railway Company extended passenger service into Southern Illinois via what is now known as Union Station/Western Springs Boulevard; this made western Springfield an integral part of eastern Chicago. In 1917–1918 World War I veteran Jesse Owens served as mayor of Western Springs; he also spearheaded efforts to rename all streets within town after American veterans who had fought during World War I or later campaigns for democracy around the world (see also: Streets program in western SPRINGS). In 1951 City Councilwoman Rita Harding won election as Mayor Pro Tem with 54% of the vote over incumbent Art Carlson; she held office until May 3rd following her appointment as Vice President pro tempore of the United States Senate effective June 30th 2001 following William McKinney's resignation from that position effective May 15th 2001 personnel-wise due to health concerns related to cancerous melanoma which had been diagnosed two years prior while he served in that capacity as Assistant Director for Health Services for Hinsdale County Government - more commonly known simply as "McKinney". After one term as Mayor Pro Tem Harding vacated her seat upon becoming City Councilwoman for District 4 Southwestern Cook County IL where she has since served since then including two terms on Aldermanic District 5 which includes much of downtown Chicago suburbs including Northwestern Indiana University`s McCormick Place Campus

Western Springs is a small town in Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1871 and has been the seat of government for the unincorporated community since that time. The town is located on the banks of the Sangamon River, east of Chicago. The first settler in Western Springs was John A. Manson, who arrived in 1871. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Sangamon River and named it Western Springs. In 1879, he married Emma Jane Humphrey and moved to Eastern Michigan before settling in Western Springs. John A. Manson died in 1915 and his wife took over management of Western Springs until her death in 1922. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Western Springs and announced plans for construction of a new airfield at what is now Elmira Municipal Airport north of town (the existing Elmira Municipal Airport had been used by military planes). The president also announced plans for a waterworks project that would provide water to residents of Eastern Michigan and Western Illinois for use at Elmira Municipal Airport; this project failed to materialize however due to financial problems withinwesternsprings incorporation). In 1946, there were efforts underway by local politicians to annex into Cook County; these efforts failed however as Cook County did not want any part of an incorporated township with no government control over its own affairs. In 1971, after years of discussion between various city officials from eastern cities which had annexed into Chicago during the 1970s because their home prices had increased so much, Mayor John Fenton proposed annexing into Chicago as well but this proposal too failed when it came time for City Council consideration..
