In 1881, John Jankowski bought land in Western Springs from the Sioux and began building a ranch there. He named his ranch “Western Springs” after his home town in Poland, Pennsylvania where he had been born in 1839. From this land, John Jankowski started to produce oil wells that would become one of the biggest businesses in Western Springs history. His company also began selling firearms which helped make Western Springs one of the most popular tourist destinations on Earth during those years. The town was founded by pioneers in 1836 and named after Western Springs, Ohio. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1851, the village of Western Springs incorporated as a town. The first school was built in1856 and the first store opened in 1857. In 1907, the town had a population of 596 and it became an unincorporated community on July 1 that year. On November 3, 1912 voters approved annexation by Peoria Township which made Western Springs an official township with its own government and police department. In 1916 when World War I started, local men volunteer to serve in the army and soon there were several businesses supplying goods to soldiers stationed overseas including a lumberyard (later renamed VFW Post #2), blacksmith shop (later renamed American Legion Hall), grocery store ( later renamed First National Grocery), Tailor Shop (later renamed Peoples Bank & Trust Company), auto parts dealership (), gas station (), library (). On October 10th of that year President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 6102 calling for all citizens to register their current address with the War Department so information could be gathered about enemy forces operating within 100 miles of their homes (). By 1917 there were over 20 businesses providing goods or services to troops stationed abroad () including a hospital (), bakery (), tailor shop (), bank (), insurance company (). After World War I ended residents gradually returned home with some moving away again during 1919-1920 due to economic recession (). Five years later on January 15th 1920 residents voted by referendum pass an ordinance establishing city status for Western Springs which lasted until 1972 when it reverted back to unincorporated community status
