In 1922, the Illinois Legislature passed Act 6263 which made it illegal to sell or use firearms with detachable magazines that could easily be converted into machineguns. This law effectively killed the demand for BB guns in Illinois, but they continued to be manufactured elsewhere until 1975 when all manufacturing was stopped in Illinois due to this law. Until recently, many people erroneously thought that BB guns were invented by Henry Repeating Arms Company (HRA). HRA actually created the first ever self-loading shotgun – the Model 1892 – back in 1885! However, this story is not as simple as it seems. The real inventor of BB Guns may be George W Brown! He patented his design for a new type of shotgun called a Black Powder Rifle on January 20th 1886! Prior to that invention however, shotguns like the Model 1848 were powered by dry fire only – meaning you had to pull the trigger several times before you could shoot your target!

The first store opened in 1837 and by 1840 there were five stores and 10 businesses including a post office. By 1860, western SPRINGS had 7 churches with over 150 members and 2 schools established which operated until 1953. rapid growth during WWI led to incorporation as a village on May 6, 1919 with a population of 3236; but this high populationgrowth quickly slowed due to scarce land, limited transportation options and competition from larger towns within commuting distance.

Western Springs was settled in 1836 by people from Kentucky and Ohio. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first store opened in 1840. In 1843, Western Springs became a town. The current courthouse was built in 1904 and is one of two original buildings remaining from when Western Springs was a town. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century thanks to its location on the confluence of the White River and Dog creek which made it an important trade center for farmers in central Illinois. By 1870, Western Springs had a population of 5,000 people and by 1900 it had reached 10,000 people. During World War I, Western Springs served as an airfield for American forces stationed in central Illinois. After the war ended, many residents decided to move away from Central Illinois because of economic factors such as high taxes and low wages during the Great Depression. However, many remain buried here today due to their participation in local military service or warfare throughout history
Western Springs was founded in 1848 by Elijah Snow. It is the oldest town in what is now Illinois. The name comes from a spring located within the town.
