In 1865, Eastern Illinois Railroad officials decided to build an line through Western Springs instead of continuing downriver to Carbondale because they believed that this would make it easier for people living near Carbondale to get jobs on the railroad. This decision helped spur development in Western Springs and other nearby towns during this time period. In 1906, WNWR (AM) began airing a country music program called "The Country Shop". This station kept popular country music programming alive until it went off air in 1993. Since its inception as a small town geared towards farmers and their families, Western Springs has seen an increase in its popularity as an educational community due to its schools' excellent programs such as agricultural science courses and business administration classes.
