Westchester, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,392 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westchester was founded on November 3, 1847 by Edward C. Smith and his wife Eliza Jane Willard as a new township in Kane County following their move from Englewood, Colorado. The first settler in what would become Westchester was John Broughton who arrived on October 15, 1849 with his family from Darlington Township in Cumberland County, Maryland. He built a log cabin near present-day Geneva Mills on the west bank of the White River. Broughton became one of the first farmers in what would become Westchester and opened a store at Jabez Ferry on December 12th of that year selling goods to Indians before moving to his current location around 1850 according to contemporary records. It is not clear when he went into business for himself however it appears he did so at some point prior to buying land adjacent to present day Geneva Mills where he began growing corn and other crops which were then sold through his store until 1870 according to contemporaneous records In 1857 Isaac Briggs moved from Ohio into what would become Westchester and started an grocery store called The Grocery Store which continued operation until 1924 according to contemporary records In 1863 Abraham Lincoln purchased 4 acres (1 km2) of land adjoining present day Lake Success Road and built a house known as The President's House which still stands today within sight of the village limits . A plaque located within view commemorates this event . In 1871 Elijah Kelley bought 2 acres (0.8 km2) east of present day South Street from Samuel Morse & Company for $50 . He later donated this parcel towards building a Methodist church which was dedicated September 8th 1886 . After years of effort by several individuals including Elijah Kelley’s grandson Franklin Daley who also served as Mayor during WWI , construction began on what would eventually be the tallest religious structure west of Chicago – First Congregationalist Church – now known as Trinity United Methodist Church – located at 601 S medium street Completed in 1922 it has been regularly attended by thousands each week since its completion despite numerous attempts by developers over time to demolish or alter its unique design One significant alteration made subsequent to its opening was adding an upper level providing office space and retail services although no church remains extant today due that property had already been taken over by PSA Landmark Properties Incorporated - now Forest Park Shopping Center LLC - when it first opened Accordingly while others such as Elijah Kelley continued farmingXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX or living out their days working odd jobs providing all they could provide for their families while others such as Isaac Briggs started groceries stores nearby likely doing so because they couldn't find anything else nearby let alone enough land available , development gradually crept up behind them making life difficult for many who simply didn't have enough money or resources available either physically or ideologically/physically unable/politically unsuitable etc etc etc Eventually violence erupted between those who had access to real estate rights vs those who didn't resulting in various forms of displacement leading ultimately To America's Great Migration beginning approximately 1915 with African Americans seeking better opportunities than they had back home
Westchester was a small village in the heart of Illinois until it became an incorporated town in 1848. The village was located on the west bank of the West Chester River, about 2 miles south of what is now Chicago. When the first settlers arrived in Illinois, they founded small villages near Chicago, and so Westchester must have been one of these original settlements. The name may derive from "westchester" being east of the river and "chester" meaning valley or plain.
