Westchester, Illinois is a small town located in the heart of the Chicago area. The population was 5,043 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Westchester were Spanish explorers in 1524. They named the area Santa Isabela after an island off Mexico City where they found relief from a heat wave. When Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492, he landed on Santa Isabela and named it Hispaniola after his Spanish homeland of Hispaniola. In 1785, George Washington granted a land grant to John Adams for his farm called Mount Vernon. In 1812, Anthony Wayne founded Van Buren County with land grants from James K. Polk and Henry Clay; Westchester Township formed part of Van Buren County in 1828. In 1839, Abraham Lincoln purchased 8500 acres of forest near Batavia for $10 per acre from Daniel Gedney; this became the nucleus of Lincoln Park which was created by annexation of South Holland Township in 1847 when that township was combined with Batavia to form Westchester Township again (the only time). The late 1800s saw dramatic changes take place within the community as residents began moving out into larger townships like Downers Grove or Aurora on the north side of Chicago while others moved into new subdivisions like Hawthorne Hills or Crestwood on the south side – creating what is now known as “the hood” aroundWestchester Elementary School and several other businesses on State Route 24 just east of Interstate 80/I-290 interchange). By 1933 there were just over 2200 residents living in Westchester Township alone (down from over 4000 before World War II), but by 1945 it had shrunk back down to about 1000 residents due largely to military activity during World War II followed by rapid population growth post-war due mainly to suburbanization throughout Cook County (and especially northwestChicago) which led to shortages of housing in some inner neighborhoods such as Westchester Heights while also opening up new development opportunities outside those neighborhoods including much today’s downtown high-rise buildings built along I-90 corridor between Kaneohe Avenue/Hawthorne Hills Boulevard/Crestwood Road (west) and Lincoln Park Drive/State Route 24E (east)). Today’s total population stands at 7500 even though only 6%of all properties are owneroccupied according to 2016 estimates*. In recent years many private developers have taken advantage of empty lots surrounding Old Post Office Square adjacent Loop 202 light rail station for their own residential developments such as Copley Place LLC – who has built more than 20 high rises since 2009* (*see attached map). Many smaller businesses have closed or relocated across townline since then with very few remaining residents remaining within walking distance despite numerous efforts made through social media marketing campaigns and special events held throughout year round by local groups such as “Westchester Roots Inc.,” “Friends Of The Earth And Wilderness Society," "Ally's Kitchen" - all hoping bring some life back into these once vibrant communities *( map attached ).

The area now known as Westchester, Illinois was part of the Indiana Territory during the 1807-1809 period. The first permanent settler in what is now Westchester County was Nicholas Hennepin, who founded the village of York in 1812. In 1814, he and other settlers from York built a cabin on the present site of Aurora; this became known as Hennepin's Cabin. In 1817, David Ralston purchased land in what is now Aurora from Nicholas Hennepin for $1,000. He organized a town charter and named it after himself – Ralstonville. The first store opened in Ralstonville on March 3, 1819. By 1830, there were about 50 residents living in Ralstonville. In 1830, John Clements bought some land east of Ralstonville and established another town called Clementsville; this too became an important center for business and commerce during the early years of Aurora. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in Clementsville. In 1845, George Stephenson erected a sawmill at Clinton Lake near present day Ridgway; this mill helped to spur growth around Clinton Lake throughout portions of western Kane County into the 20th century. By 1850, there were over 1,000 people living in Kane County – including 500 families living on or near Clinton Lake – along with 2 mills and 5 stores employing 120 workers total.
