After World War II ended with America's entry into McCarthyism and social unrest across much of America (especially during those years), Mayor Hynes disbanded this department and placed it back within Chicago's public works organization which still governs local government today . On July 1st 1948 (also known as "The Day That Everything Changed"), after more than 50 years as one municipality within Kane County Area B (the portion east of Cicero Avenue including downtownChicago) – including 46 years as one municipality among several municipalities within Area A (west of Cicero Avenue) – Westchester went completely independent becoming an unincorporated community separate from any incorporated community within Kane County Area B or Area A save for some water rights which remainwith Kankakee Township .
