Westchester, Illinois is a small town in southern Illinois. It is bordered by the states of Indiana and Kentucky to the north, and Missouri to the east. The population was 12,814 at the 2010 census. Westchester is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Westchester was Elijah Holmes in 1837. He built a log cabin on his farmstead near today's intersection of Harlem Road and County Route 918. In 1838, David Brown founded a post office in what would become Westchester with three other settlers. The first post office closed in 1861 due to lack of patronage. In 1871, John Tilton purchased land adjacent to present day Harlem Road for $1,000 from Henry Silliman Distilleries Company proprietor Samuel Pillsbury Jr.. Tilton erected a large frame house on his property which served as the first schoolhouse in what would become Westchester Township (now neighboring Elmhurst). A two-story school building was completed in 1872 by local contractor Nathan Warner and named after Reverend James Gadsden who had donated land for it. The township was organized on April 15, 1892 when it was annexed by Cook County. On November 3rd, 1907, voters approved an amended referendum that created a new township board with five members instead of four members mandated by county ordinance that year; one member per ward became effective immediately with all wards inheriting one member each upon annexation into Cook County government as required by state law then still being contested at the time In 1915-16 there were 7 firehouses serving 13 townships across Cook County including those within today's municipality of Westchester which made up most or all of its volunteer firefighters until disbanding during prohibition era . The last fire house operated May 14th 1946 when it shut down due to financial constraints brought about by prohibition Although much has changed since then such as annexations within Cook County following unification into one jurisdiction under state government many aspects remain unchanged including firefighter numbers

Westchester is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 35,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westchester is bordered by Cook County to the north and east, Lake Michigan to the south and west, and DuPage County to the northwest. The village of Rye is also in Westchester. The first permanent settlers in what is now Westchester were farmers who arrived between 1815 and 1820. They were followed by others during the 1830s and 1840s, as land became available for farming from central Illinois due to gold rushes in that region. In 1846, John Leland Keyes purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land northeast of Rye from Johannes Weiser for $5 per acre ($30 at current prices). This purchase created what would become known as Keyes Township; it was named after John Leland Keyes himself. In 1870, western Dearborn Township was organized from parts of both Keyes Townships; Dearborn became its namesake because it lay along one edge of what would eventually be called Westchester Heights neighborhood on Chicago's South Side. In 1886 when Dearborn Heights was annexed into Chicago proper, much of what now makes up Westchester—including much of its agricultural backbone—was included within that new municipality too; however, many residents still retained their namesakes throughout their lives despite moving closer to city limits. In 1924 nearby Elmhurst formed a cooperative grocery store district with other villages surrounding it which united to form a single enterprise under the name "Empire Grocery & Meat Market", later becoming Empire State Grocery Co-operative Union Limited Partnership (ESGCLP). From this moment on most people associated with or lived near Elmhurst referred to themselves simply as “Westchesterians” or “Westchesters” even though they may have resided elsewhere before incorporation into ESGCLP or beyond its boundaries served by different cooperatives during those years- something that continues today albeit with slightly different boundaries typical for suburban areas such as Elmhurst today (i.e., Wellesley Road instead of East Harlem Avenue). ESGCLP played an important role in building not just downtownChicago but also Midwest suburbs such as Skokie and Oak Park into communities with their own shopping centers and post office districts which continue to this day - something unheard of 50 years ago! Although commercial agriculture had been major contributors early on in township development there were also some homebuilders active beginning around1920 who erected evergreen trees along Girdwood Drive off Newmarket Rd/Route 31A shortly after they moved there from rural Livingston county NY where they had built homes since1890 After World War II until well into the 1970s almost all housing development took place outside city Limits rather than within them contributing heavily towards suburban sprawl across most neighborhoods today we can only imagine how unsustainable this type OF growth really becomes over time
