Westchester, Illinois is a town in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,865. The town is bordered to the north by DuPage County and to the east by Kane County. It covers an area of 20 square miles (50 km²). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Westchester were French traders who had established trading posts along the Fox River in 1618-1619. These traders brought with them their own Native American allies, who founded several villages including one called Potawatomi in 1623 near present-day White Plains Township. The local landowning elites were among those who benefited from this commerce and colonization; they organized themselves into township governments and developed nearby farms that supplied their homes with food and other goods during times of political instability or famine. In 1837, when Illinois became a state, Westchester voted against becoming part of it on the grounds that it would be too expensive to maintain its own government under such regulations as high taxes and an inadequate infrastructure. Despite this protestation, however, Westchester joined DuPage County on February 14th of that year as one of fourteen townships within that county - also voting against annexation by Chicago because it felt that such an action would not benefit its residents any more than other neighboring townships did. This resistance to outside influence continued through much of early twentieth century; for example, when Chicago annexed Aurora in 1906 and then Addison eleven years later (because Aurora was considered more populous), Westchester was again uninvolved in these decisions save for occasional local meetings to discuss annexation options or problems peculiar to its location (. . .) During World War IIWestchester served as both a training site for military personnel manning Lake Michigan beaches and as a source for labor for General Motors plants at Downers Grove Heights and Joliette Park.. In 1949 however voting began on whether or not to secede from Du Page County over questions about lack of social servicesavailable within the larger community while also voicing concerns about possible encroachment by Chicago interests - ultimately resulting in secession taking place on November 3rd,. Today Westchester's economy revolves around health care services offered through area hospitals as well as food productionandan retail stores located throughout downtown which include two grocery stores (. . .)
Westchester was a rural township in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was named for the Westchester hills in New York. The first settler in what is now Westchester Township was John Hudgins in 1837. By 1870, over 100 people lived there. In 1907, the Chicago Board of Education designated the area as part of the Chicago school district. The population of Westchester declined from its peak around 1930 to a low of just under 1,000 by 1970. However, it has since rebounded and now has a population of about 11,500.
