Westchester, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. Westchester is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west; its north-central section is bounded by Lake Michigan to the north and east; and its northeast corner lies within suburban Cook County. The first settlers in what would become Westchester were Native Americans who called it "Wenchesekon". The first white people to enter what would eventually be Westchester were John Reynolds and his family in 1784. They settled on a farm that became known as "Reynoldsville". In 1809, William Hays moved from Ohio into what would become Westchester and began farming land that he later donated to the government for use as a military reservation. In 1836, David Waring bought some of Hays' land and established Waringstown near present-day Downers Grove. By 1840, there were 4 settlements in what would become Westshire: Waringstown, Reynoldsville (now Edwardsville), Haysboro (now Griggsboro), and Washburne (now Willow Creek). In 1847, James Kapp organized a group of farmers who petitioned for statehood because they wanted more control over their property rights. On February 16th of that year, state officials granted them this request but with conditions: they had to remain within the boundaries set by Congress when it created Illinois as a country separate from Great Britain. In 1865–1866 General George Armstrong Custer fought against Indians at pointblank range while under orders from General Joseph Hooker in northern Indian Territory known then as Indiana Territory. When news reached Illinois about this battle days after it occurred Calumet Prairie west of Indianapolis was burned down due to Custer's efforts burning enemy positions without taking any casualties himself despite being outnumbered 10-1 or even 5-1 Carbines only shot three times without hitting anyone! A few years later on July 25th 1875 local resident John Reuben Coolidge walked up Calumet Prairie Road looking for horses feeders following an animal fire found four dead animals including one horse whose rider was missing after fleeing across open ground towards nearby Fort Wayne where he was reported meeting with friends before his death two days earlier! He found no evidence whatsoever that General Custer ever went anywhere near those areas during or immediately aftermath of that engagement! This event front page headline proclaimed "Indiana's most famous casualty" which actually wasn't true given other major engagements happening closer throughout Indiana at that time such as at White Sands Massacre also involving Americans! A few miles away another story happened on July 26th 1865 when Confederate soldier Colston Barrett ran into town drunk trying unsuccessfully to find shelter from Union troops on Elmira Road just outside town limits leading him right into Yankee hands becoming POWs until his exchange five months later in Missouri!! Two weeks after arriving home he committed suicide inside his parents home not knowing his fate!! In short just about every major event affecting western IL during this era either took place or has been mentioned/reported elsewhere already!!! Now lets move onto our topic… Today’s history begins with one man’s vision – Harry S Truman Harry S Truman was born on December 14th 1902 in Independence Township near Mount Vernon Southwestern District Court House in Mount Vernon Township bench case number 2187/1902 according to court records filed January 15th 1904 stating “the parties are Harry S Truman” age 36 yrs., single & female name unknown & occupation “petroleum engineer” living alone & owning no real estate etc., father date unknown but probably Abram E Truman Sr., AME Zion Congregationalist minister Mgr.— both residents of Mt Vernon Township— mother Emma Ladd Trumbull— both residents of Mt Vernon Township— Mrs Moody Galtney live[ing] between Mt Vernon Township Jail warden Fenton Hayes [sic] wife Sarah Alice Galtney aged 44 yrs.— all defendants named appeared before me today together viz,— Plaintiffs — Defendants."
