The "Westchester Rifle and Pistol Club" was founded in 1892 in Westchester, Illinois. The club enjoyed success until the early 1900s when World War I led to a decline in membership. After the war, there were fewer opportunities for shooting because of prohibition. In the 1920s, the club resumed its success with a new clubhouse and program. In 1932, the club merged with another rifle and pistol society in Westchester County to form the "Illinois Rifle and Pistol Association." In 1949, the NRA began sponsoring target shooting events at Wicker Park High School which continues to this day. There have been numerous NRA-sponsored tournaments at Wicker Park since then including three consecutive championships won by Team Illinois in 1987-1989, 1992-1994 and 1998-2000.
Westchester, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 63,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Westchester is named after Otto von Westphalen who settled there in 1807. The first permanent settler in what is now Westchester was Nicholas Wistar. He and his wife Deborah founded a small farm on the east side of present day Elmhurst Road in 1808. Wistar died two years later from a fever contracted while outfitting for an expedition to explore the new world. In 1810, John Winthrop built his home near what is now Elmhurst Road and made land available for farming on it in 1830. In 1847, when Cook County was created, part of its eastern border formed the western edge of what is now Westchester Township and part of that township forming Lake Forest Park covering much of today's village of Oak Lawn (west side). That same year saw the opening of $6 million worth of railroad extensions through Cook County including one to Oak Lawn which became known as "The Great White Way". Today's village center was laid out around this time with merchants and farmers clustering around three main intersections: Michigan Avenue/Oak Lawn Avenue; Ogden Road/Michigan Avenue; and Elmhurst Road/Ogden Road (north-south axis). Highway 509 traverses most or all of these areas which made transportation easy into downtown Chicago via early streetcar lines operated by Metropolitans Railway Company (later Chicago Rapid Transit Company) - see map below. In 1865, John Prentice opened a gristmill on Elk Grove Drive northwest of present day Midtown Crossing shopping district just north of Woodlawn Cemetery where he raised Cornish sheep until 1861 when he closed up shop due to changes brought about by war efforts led by then-Governor Abraham Lincoln seeking higher prices for wool imported from Australia during that conflict - see photo below right taken circa 1915 inside old mill building still standing today adjacent to Midtown Crossing mall parking lot). In 1870 alone over 100 businesses were established within our borders including 14 banks and 12 grocery stores! By 1920 over 60% Of All Work done In The Village Was For Personal Use Only! And Businesses Were Incorporated To Serve Themselves! Today Over Half A Century Later OurVillage Is Still Moving Forward Changing With The Times & Many New Businesses Have Been Added
