During the early years of California’s gold rush (1848-1853), many people traveled through West Chicago on their way to San Francisco. This influx of visitors led to increased business for local businesses and also resulted in population growth for the town. In 1865, John Cranch donated land adjacent to his grocery store in what is now downtown WestChicago for use as a public square. This location served as an important meeting place for neighborhood groups and helped promote civic responsibility among residents throughout the 1800s。 In 1870-71 Captain Julius Pemberton conducted an investigation into alleged railroads cutting through various Indian reservations east of Milwaukee County line northward towards Waukegan Lake – this operation is generally considered one of America’s earliest land sales ceremonies (). After completing his report he recommended allowing eight miles wide suffrage within organized white communities along railroad lines so all voices could be heard (). Thus began one aspect of Cubs history—-the incorporation/establishment by whites throughout southwestern Illinois (and later western Wisconsin)of black towns (), often with African American majorities (), without any native or aboriginal inhabitants having any input whatsoever
West Chicago was founded in 1871 by two brothers, Amos and Solomon West. The community is located on the west side of Chicago, between Cicero and East Side streets. West Chicago was initially named "Milwaukee," but it became known as "WestChicago" after its incorporation into the City of Chicago in 1872.
